Been meaning to discuss this topic for a long time, now seems as good a time as any. Allow me to examine all the starting weapons for a moment:
// Uncharted 3 Starting Long Guns
// G-MAL
PROS:
CONS:
// M9
PROS:
CONS:
// FAL-SS
PROS:
CONS:
// KAL-7
PROS:
CONS:
// Dragon Sniper
PROS:
CONS:
// AK-47
PROS:
CONS:
// Look at the AK. Just look at it.
It looks so out of place wouldn't you agree? What does it have going for it exactly? Sure it has good damage and above-average stopping power, but it's only decent at close-to-medium range. And even then it's only on par with the G-MAL, a FAL-SS will still beat it in its best range -- which is painfully narrow to begin with. All the other weapons excel in some capacity despite their drawbacks. The M9 competes directly with the AK yet it's superior in nearly every way not to mention it becomes a monster with the RoF attachment.
Let's also not forget that the AK's accuracy is so bad that unless you use the Accuracy mod you have no hope of going up against solid players using the other starting rifles. This essentially renders all of its character variations null and void. Where does that put it? Stuck with a slow reload (on top of its numerous cons) and unable to take advantage of any of the other helpful mods that the other weapons will be benefiting from.
// Solution(s) [updated 7/8/12]
Even with its recent accuracy "buff" the AK is by far the weakest of all the rifles. I believe there are 3 ways to balance the AK:
1. Accurate version: While its TTK remains low, this AK's high stoppin
2. RoF version: This version is the same as the current AK though
3. "Retro Lancer" version: Modeled after Gears of War 3's Retro Lancer, this AK's damage and recoil are increased resulting in a rifle that absolutely beasts short range balanced by low accuracy and unusable hipfire. The KAL's aim-able big brother if you will.
Personally option 3 intrigues me the most, it would be a very unique weapon that sacrifices range for unmatched killing potential close quarters. A weapon with real character.
This also might appease those afraid of winding up with a "cloned' M9 while having a weapon that has a clearly defined roll which would add further variety to gunfights and teamwork.

Well put together thread, and I agree.
I think the AK just needs another accuracy boost.

Gonna have to trademark that.
I love the sound and feel of this gun, so if it's buffed, I'm a happy **bleep**.

Yeah the AK feels wonderful. I absolutely adore it with the accuracy mod, then I begin to wonder. Why does everyone else get 2-3 mods for their guns to become even better when I get one that makes me on par with the other base weapons? I could just suck potatoes with the base AK, but I never see anyone do well with it...

IMO it needs a lot less Recoil. M9 is soooo much easier to use and for one bullet difference? Puts the M9 user with such an advantage that the M9 user would have to be completely incompetent or blindsided to lose that battle.

Yeah, it needs a tighter bullet spread, and less recoil.

I don't think Uncharted 3 has spread, only recoil I believe. I'm almost positive that your bullets always go where the center dot on the reticule is.
