A lot of people criticize 3 and 4 because they don't match up to the rest of the Twisted Metals. Were they that bad, though?

personally no they werent bad games, but they were definitely inferior to the originals...like jaffe said before "they werent bad games, they just were bad twisted metal games" i dont think the developers (989 studios) understood the world of Twisted Metal.

I know all of the cutscenes, and while some of them may have been goofy and poorly written, they were still decent, in my opinion.

The levels on TM3 were OK, but the controls were clunky. I thought TM4 was the second best game on PS1 after TM2. It was more fun on split screen though.

I think you nailed it boxcar182 and David did too way back when he said that. They were damn fun games. They just weren't great Twisted Metal games. I agree that 989 just really didn't understand what made Twisted unique. The characters started to become characteratures of themselves. Gameplay wise they were good but had some very wonky physics issues that did take away from the gameplay.
All that said I think they get a bit too much hate and I don't feel ashamed to say I have them in my Collection alongside Twisted Metal, Twisted Metal 2, Twisted Metal Head On PS2 port, Twisted Metal Small Brawl, Twisted Metal Black/Online,

yea exactly, i played part 3 alot and i liked the vehicles but yes the endings were very cheesy but thats 989 studios fault cause they just didnt get "it". Part 4 was a fun game to play but i didnt really like any of the characters because there was to many new ones..i dont think anyone was from the originals besides in a "super" boss fight form and sweet tooth, again though both 3 and 4 were fun to play but just werent in the right universe as 1 and 2

I think they're pretty bad games. It's important to remember Jaffe knew the teams, he is probably friends with lots of them . . . he's going to be nice.
I mean, there are redeeming qualities I guess, but they did review poorly for a reason.
I remember I was loving TM2. Back then I never rented games. I always bought them. I bought Twisted Metal after playing TM2 because I knew if it was even half as good as TM2 I'd love it too. I wasn't disapointed.
With TM3 though I had a weird feeling. So, instead of buying, I did the abnormal for me and rented it. My bro and I went to play it, and it lasted in my Playstation all of five minutes. After that we promptly took it out and put TM2 back in.
When TM4 came out I gave it five minutes too just to be sure. All I can say is . . . . eeewwwww..........
I know lots of peeps had fun with them and I'm glad. It just wasn't my experience.

well of course you wont like after playing only 5 mins...
