It's just that I can't imagine people getting infected by being bitten because that's way to close to zombie's. In the scene with Bill, Bill started checking Joel for growths not bites or scratches making it seem even more possible that the virus is airborne.

Well, we also have to remember that in these kinds of stories the survivors usually aren't sure how exactly the virus/infection is spread - so checking for bites or screatches might just be a precaution even if you can't actually get infected that way. But who knows. I really think that this is why Bill got so defensive with Joel and Ellie, because they weren't wearing gas masks with such close proximity to the infected.
