My system got YLOD yesterday. I don't really care about this particular system, but I would like to get a my data off the HDD before trashing it. I make back-ups on the first of every month, so this happened at like the worst possible time.
Anyway, I've heard about a hair dryer fix that will temperately get the system running again without having to open everything up. Has anyone here tried it? If so, did it work? I've seen a lot of success stories on the web, and not a lot of people ruining their system.

Solved! Go to Solution.

Ahhh s**t sorry to hear that Sonic, even though you're not that 'fussed' about this system it always sucks when a systen gets YLOD.
I have to say i have had no expericence of YLOD (touch wood) & hopefully I never do, or at least not for a long time, I've heard of this 'Hairdryer Fix' & I've seen loads of videos on Youtube etc, but sorry I can't help you out personally.
Good luck to you.

Thanks.
There is NO WAY a hair dryer can get hot enought to melt solder. There are plenty of other components that would melt/break WAY before any connections were repaired. Right??

If a hair dryer could melt solder, then there would be a lot of melted scalps out there!
Seriously, I don't think a hair dryer will work, or work very well. If you are going to attempt this you should go buy a real heat gun.
You can buy one for under $30 at home depot, here is a good guide I suggest you follow:

Good Luck!

I'm kind of leaning toward using a hairdryer so I can report back here.

I would think that the oven method would work better, since you can get higher temperatures and more even heating...

True. But I want to know if the ridiculous method will work.

You should try this, this way you don't have to even open up your PS3...
