I deleted my music and game data of games I don't use and at the most vive used about 4 1/2 GB of game data. My ps3 has 21 GB left and I tried to download Ratchet and Clank All 4 One which takes up 14 GB but the store says that there is not enough space on my HDD. I don't know what to do. My ps3 apparently has used up a total of 16GB on I don't know what. I have themes but they don't take up more than 125 MB of space. My photos only take up to 92MB. I'm confused on what my ps3 has that has taken up 16GB of space. My ps3 is the 40GB model. 

I need help ASAP!

Welcome to the PlayStation Community.

To download a 14GB game you need at least 28GB of space, possibly a little more, basically you need double the space, the extra 14GB of data/Space will then be freed up after the install is complete.

As for what's taking up your space, in the scheme of things a 40GB HDD really isn't that big & I would advise you to upgrade your HDD or get an external HDD to store stuff on, but there's the PS3 System software for a start, then there's PS Home which takes up space, as do pictures, music, game saves, DLC etc etc.

You need  to have available double the space of the total size of the game to be downloaded & installed.

 14GB |Space for the game to be downloaded
+14GB |Space for the game's installation
------
 28GB

You need an extra 7GB of free space.

Try to free up space by deleting  game data files for games you are done playing or wont be playing for a while. This data is found under Games/Game Data Utility

Thanks. But I don't know what can be taking up 16GB of space. I know I need a larger HDD but they're expensive and I wouldn't know where and what kind of HDD to buy for my ps3.

i did that already and i was only able to get up to 21GB of space and im missing the other 16GB of spce

When you are ready to buy a new HDD for you PS3 make sure it is a 2.5in SATA drive with a 9.5mm height.

What takes space.

Pictures, movies, text messages, downloaded games, DLC, apps, game patches, even the PS3 OS takes space.

This happened to me, When i download Ncaa 13 has 8gb can't space my ps3 like 10gb deleti game point changed My ps3 now is 15gb download Ncaa 13 15gb now. Ncaa 13 8gb to 15gb pay 7gb space free. I have Clank $ Ratch all 4 15gb Idk how many, Probaby 30gb.

If you're going to upgrade your hdd I'd recommend this one:

It has many different size options.I have the 1TB model and it's fantastic. I don't recommend a Western Digital drive though.I had a bad experience with their drive in my ps3.It cause constant freezing in my games.Hope I  helped you out
