What does this mean when I fight someone online?  I sometimes see this clothing symbol under their character with a yellow exclamation point sign.  When their character shows up on my screen, it looks like they're wearing a new costume to me... what am I missing here?

It means you haven't bought the costume.

Oooohh... so even though I can see it being worn by the other guy, Its just letting me know that I would have to buy it myself if I wanted it too... as opposed to unlocking it, etc.

No, technically you SHOULD be seeing what they're wearing since the data for the costumes are already on your HDD... but Capcom decides to not let you see them until you buy it.

Also, when you see this, you don't see them wear the costume, they only appear in Original 01 which isn't what they're actually wearing..

The Xbox 360 version has a free "catalog" download that lets you see other people's costumes, without you being required to actually own the costumes. I haven't heard of any plans to bring this to the PSN as of yet. It's not a problem if they don't bring it over tho...

Technically speaking, another product or brand would actually have to put up some form of "competition" in the first place for it to be labelled as another "competitor".
