I will take Ivan Rodriguez because of his defensive abilitys, nobody comes close in that categorie.  Imo you shouldnt look to your catcher for huge offense, you should look for great defense and pitch callling in them.

Defensive ability should always be the primary asset of a catcher, if he can hit it's a bonus but strong defense is a must.

ivan rodriguez is aging and it clearly shows. he was the best catcher a few years ago and he still has good play behind the plate but he isnt the best anymore. its very close at current day but unfortunatly id have to say joe mauer is the best right now with his solid defense and pretty decent offense. (i say unfortunatly because i hate the twins... thats just me though)
