Doom 3 BFG: no audio through the optical audio out

Hello all, I've contacted Bethesda with this issue and so far no solution from them.  So I am turning to the forums.

 

When I have my audio signal going through my Optical Audio Out there is no sound whatsoever coming from the system.  My surround sound receiver is not even showing that a signal is coming through.  When I switch to the standard HDMI audio out there is audio and also when I switch to the standard Video/Audio there is audio as well.  But absolutely nothing through the Optical Audio.  Is anyone else having this issues?  Or is it me getting confused with some setting?  Or does it even support it?
