RPG reason

17 replies 1 views Edited Feb 2, 2006

Do you like the reason behind the main rpg story? Do you prefer:

  • The chosen one scenerio. (Tales of Symphonia )
  • Just caught up into the storyline by accident. (Grandia )
  • Personal reasons (Killed someone precious, etc...) and is now out for revenge. (Shadow Hearts)
  • It is your main characters duty to go after the evil, the knight saving the princess.( Zelda )
  • Can't remember but is compelled to help. ( Digital Devil Saga )
  • Secondary character thrown into the main characters spot by some event ( FF7 )
  • End of the world (Chrono Trigger )
  • Ancient evil that has awakened (Dragon Quest 8)

The reason the main character is involved does not generally matter to me, to be honest. As long as it is not too far fetched (FF7 really approaches that 'too far fetched' line. I mean, it is WAY out there in left field)

I like the personal reasons, like revenge. I also like the old cliché end of the world and evil has awakened

I try not to think of the reason too much. Because most RPGs lose sight of it themselves by the end of the game, either breaking down from whatever it was to save the world from ancient, returning God/Goddess/Beast of Destruction or spouting too many philosophical/psychological/whatever babble that is going to go over my head anyway.

I guess I prefer the fighting for a good cause reason, or the fighting to protect someone dear reason. Kinda like Breath of Fire DQ, Ryu isn't out to save the world or change it, he just wants to help Nina. It was nice, sweet and different.

Just make sure the reason does not involve AMNESIA!!!! I am SO sick of the anmesia nonsense.

Personally, i've always been a fan of those "end of the world" scenarios. I also enjoy the "ancient evil that has awakened" ones as well.

I like revenge too.  *** Wild Arms SPOILER BELOW ***

After the metal demons destroyed Adlehyde, I went nuts tracking down and slaughtering every demon I could find.  My only regret was that the boss battle against Belselk was so short, because I wanted to pound on him some more.

The chosen one scenerio is probably my favorite out of all of those.  Those types of stories get to me every time.

I've always enjoyed the games where the party stumbles across an event and is drawn into the plight of the folks involved. I think it makes for better games since other characters could be pulled in from anywhere and still make sense to the plot; likewise, it could be a mechanism for treachery or possibly small side stories. Having a set cast is ok, but it sort of detracts from the unknown factor IMO.

Secondary character into the main character spot was not behind the main rpg story in FFVII, unless you mean ZACK. End of the world is basically every RPG. I like the can't remember but then does. I hate in RPGs you're supposed to always be good and things like that, no one want's to play a brown-nose character. By accident is cool, but most RPGs do that when you meet new characters....by a chance event right.  It really doesn't matter to me how the storyline plays out, as long as it does........play out w/out my personal feelings being offended.
