Do you think Harvest Moon is an RPG?

*A role-playing game (RPG) is a type of game in which players assume the roles of characters and collaboratively create narratives. Gameplay progresses according to a predetermined system of rules and guidelines, within which players may improvise freely. Player choices shape the direction and outcome of role-playing games.

Role-playing games are typically more collaborative and social than competitive. A typical role-playing game unites its participants into a single team that adventures as a group. A role-playing game rarely has winners or losers. This makes role-playing games fundamentally different from board games, card games, sports and most other types of games. Like novels or films, role-playing games appeal because they engage the imagination.*

Given what the wonderful wikipedia has to say on the matter, do you consider Harvest Moon an RPG? Many people classify it as the "simulation" genre, but I beg to differ. A player can shape the outcome of several things in an RPG, whether it is the story itself or just the characters. In Harvest Moon, your actions and choices affect how the game and several in game events turn out.

Another prominent foactor in RPGs is the level up/ customization system. I believe that this very loosely present in HM. For example, in each game the player is able to name the character, animals, and yourfarm. This is onwe of many options offered as part of character customization goes in RPGs. In A Wonderful Life you can also, depending on your bride of choice, control what your child looks like and what he will eventually turn out to be like.

Whiel most people wouldn't exactly view it as an entertaining one, HM actually does have a story. However, it is completely unscripted (for the most part). You make the story! Everything that goes on is resultant of what you do (other characters' marriages, departures, etc.). This is a level of depth that many RPGs dare not to set foot into.

I'm just curious as to everyone's views on this matter. I'd also like to discuss this terrific series with my fellow RPGers .

Some of the Harvest Moon titles (such as Back to Nature, Friends of Mineral Town, etc.) are definitely RPGs.  Ones such as A Wonderful Life, are not.

If a game has general choices made throughout the game, and has an indepth statistical system that, then it is an RPG.

Nintendo really misinterprets the term "RPG."  They named Animal Crossing the best RPG of 2002 (or whichever year it came out, I don't remember), and the Nintendo website has several of the Zelda titles listed under the RPG section .:smileytongue:
