Hi. I'm not a materials chemist, but my understanding of the situation
is that the various vectors for decomposition of these materials are
not limited just to surface intrusions. That is, even if the discs
were theoretically 100% perfectly sealed, chemical changes can occur
in the underlying substrate and related materials that could ruin
the data anyway. As I mentioned, much of these may be temperature
and humidity related, but the real problem is that we just don't
know -- and as you said we have an awful lot of our lives tied
up on these disks (think of all the photos, if nothing else for
the average family) and we don't *really* know how long they're going
