When you say that you switched to RGB output, do you mean the composite output? The red/green/blue wires? I certainly appreciate that someone found and posted a fix but I only have an HDMI cable When I spoke with R* the over the phone the rep tried to tell me that it was my PS3 and not the game. Think I will call them back...

j_gulliver wrote:I have a solution to this problem (hopefully only a temporary one!). I have a 60 gb fat ps3, which works perfectly on every other game I have. When I began playing Red Dead Redemption, the fan went into overdrive and the system got very overheated. The ps3 seemed to be straining to run the game. I then experienced freezing about 5 mins into the game, and eventually it wouldnt progress past the cutscene at the end of the race with Miss Macfarlane. I tried switching the video output to RGB (it had been running on 1080P) and it worked perfectly. It is now running without any freezing or lag on 560p. Any higher than this and it starts again. I hope a decent patch it released VERY SOON !!!
Besides the freezing, have you seen any flicker in your picture (color shift flashes)?

I have seen lots of flickering/flashing. The sky will "tear" for a split second; a thin black line appears. There is lots of this evident as I roam the world. Buildings, the ground, scenery in general all have this issue. I have an 80GB PS3 and the other person I know with the same model is using composite cables while I am using HDMI. He has no problems but I have constant freezing/lockups, graphic glitches/pop-ins and so on. I have called R* twice and I keep being told this is the first they've heard of it. I am being told to "enjoy the game on another PS3".
I understand that games have issues, but a big one like this should at least be recognized by R* and promised a resolution. I hate being in limbo wondering if I can ever play the game I just spent 60+ dollars on.
Always the same thing; game freezes after 5-60 minutes of play either online or offline. Usually happens when game is "idle", for example, cutscenes, pause menu, standing still. Game freezes but whatever audio track is loaded into the memory continues playing. A hard reset ( 3 beeps) is required to end/exit game. All other games work fine. This is a game issue, not hardware.

Good info. I will try different video settings with HDMI and component when I get home, too. HDMI with lower res setting may work.

Hell, I thought it was just me. I got mine this past saturday and played it for about an hour, but it kept on freezing one me so I took it back on sunday and traded it in for another copy, but it does the same thing. I really like the gam (what I can play of it anyways) so I really don't wanna get rid of it, but if it keeps up i'll have to. The bad thing is that Rockstar Games still hasn't even acknowledged that there's some sort of bug. I know it's not my playstation cause all my other games play just fine.

No problems for the first 10 hours or so, and then it suddenly froze on me just after plucking feathers from a songbird (it still says "Songbird feathers +2" on the bottom of the screen. The music is still playing, but the video is a freeze frame and the controller doesn't respond at all. Original 60GB PS3 with1080p HDMI video.

Sorry about the late reply. I did not experience any flickering. Firstly, all the sound apart from background noise would stop, then the game would stop loading new data. For example when I travelled into an area that required loading, it would freeze and the textures of the scenery would remain very basic. Then the game would freeze altogether. I know this probably will not be a universal fix, but it has worked for me. By switching video output i mean the Non-HDMI, standard playstation cable with the red, yellow and white coloured plugs (if the colours are different in America, the cables I am describing fit into a scart socket). I am expecting a patch from rockstar but untill then this is making the game work.
