Designing a good sim has to take so many things into account, including things from the designer's POV. Many players make the mistake of only looking at it from their POV wanting a replication, not just a simulation. Looking too closely at many leaves will stop you from seeing the whole tree.
I'll look forward to the 17th, then. To me, it sounds as if they are making a very exciting simulator.

a sim without: a formation lap
no safety car
might not be able to drive into the pits ourselves
game might take control over car as soon as you finish a race
doesn't sound like a sim to me

People like to forget what it is that we're discussing here. Even simulations are still supposed to be video games, and video games are always supposed to be fun. Formation laps, recon laps, and time spent behind a safety car aren't fun for anybody save a very limited handful of masochists, as they add absolutely nothing to the gameplay experience but do make darned sure to take away fun and replace it with boring tedium. The sole purpose of games is to entertain, and the instant they stop being fun is the instant they become a failure.
Racing sims simulate the driving part of racing. Much of the rest of it is just plain junk. Why not just suggest that we also have to simulate the driver putting on his uniform and getting into the car? How about we simulate him being interviewed by the press? I'm sure those things would be loads of fun for two people out there. Maybe we could throw in a mode wherein you play as one of the grounds crew pushing cars off the track after their engines have blown or picking up car parts after a crash!

I'm not forgetting. It's just the way I describe certain types of racing games and I am fully aware of the fun factor.
Fun is different things to different people, but having features that resemble a replication is quite different than what most players need or want in a racing simulator. To most people a replication is not needed and the developers know this when it comes to creating a product that will be used by the masses and not just a clique.

If anything there should be the sim mode and arcade mode. If you do not want to deal with the safety car and ect play arcade, if you want the full experience like a lot of us here do, play sim mode. I honestly love when you have added thins like formation lap ect in a game because it just makes it all more realistic to me.

Really though, I don't buy into the idea that non-fans of F1 are gonna go anywhere near this game anyway so why cater to an udience that isn't really interested in the first place. Seems like a silly thing to make an arcade style game for a sport supported by fanatics.
If F1 2010 is an arcade game then, oh well..., if its a sim then even better....heck even if its somewhat dissappointing F1 fans are gonna buy ; RPG guys aint..so make the game to suit the guys lined up to buy the thing from day one, and then dumb it down in arcade mode if the publisher wants the developer to do so. My 2 cents.

While I'm not a huge F1 fan I've been looking forward to this game and expect to enjoy it, especially if it is a good sim and not an arcade game. Hopefully Codemasters will remember what a great sim ToCA 3 was on the PS2 and go with that philospohy in their developement of their F1 game.
