I was getting this error code trying to set up gmail and I was sure I had everything entered correctly. I found the problem, I had IMAP turned off in gmail. The app uses IMAP to connect to gmail, so it won't work if IMAP is off. If you get this error, log-in to gmal.com and go to settings> Forwarding and POP/IMAP. If IMAP is off turn it on.

Hopefully this will help anyone getting this vague error message.

Hey I also had this problem, and your solution did not work for me - However I had an excessively long password for GMail (I am a very protective person), so I just thought I'd change it to see if it would work, and it did. I shortened my password and stopped getting this error. I am not sure if it is a password length issue, or if it just wanted me to change my password, but this is another possible solution if any others encounter this error.

Not my solution, but I found this one , and it works!
Log on to Google on your computer. Go to Account > Security > Application Specific Password > Type in desired name > Use generated password in place of main account password on the Vita email application.
