I'm sure I'm not the first to bring this up and if there is already a way to do this, do tell.
We should be able to disable our PS3s from telling all our friends we are online. This is a basic privacy issue; I don't always want everyone to know my late night gaming habits.
This should go a step further and allow us to group our friends so we can have some be able to see we are online and others be kept on a need to know basis!

nah, it makes sense wanting to keep everything as social as possible.

The only thing you can really do is create another psn account for all your late night gaming.
Why do you even care if the people on your friends list know about your late night gaming habits?
I play my PS3 at all hours of the day and night with out any concern about what my ps friends would think about me being online at certain hours.
If you don't want certain people knowing your gaming habits or what you play, maybe they shouldn't be on your friends list.

Wow you suggestions have been oh so helpful... and believe it or not it's even more embarassing than Hello Kitty blahbidy blah, as well as being impossible to run without the network. An incognito account is not really an option since I'd lose all my super dooper barbie outfits... if you haven't figured it out by now my embarrassing light night gaming habit rhymes with "alone."
I don't really care that much but I do value my privacy and it's not like this feature is asking for the moon.

Totally agree with OP.
Sometimes you just don't want to deal with people on your friendslist. Or feel guilty that you're on, but don't feel like chatting or joining. Or maybe sometimes you just want some damn privacy! Honestly, that's not too much to ask and should have been implemented from day one. This forced interaction crap is bull.
And obviously some games force you to be online (i.e. logged in) to play them or certain parts of them (leaderboards, whatever). There's no reason why there couldn't be a privacy toggle for non-multiplayer game time.

IF you value your privacy that much dont have any friends on your list then.
I can see sony not doing this as this wouldnt promote a SOCIAL environment. Valueing your privacy for late night gaming doesnt have a "social" feel to it.

Nor does your communication skills. I actually have a personal life and tangible friends in the real world and I value a seperation from reality and the gaming world. I'm sure that's not too much for you to comprehend if you took maybe a week away from your sticky console controllers to think about it.
