Re: Is my DSL fast enough for PS3 online gaming?

Jul 6, 2008
First let me clear something. 1.5mbps dl is fine but you aren't gonna host any games, may have slight lag, and your dl's might take a while. Next fios/fiber optic is the most overrated internet ever. They only bring fiber to the home but they use the same cable's as brighthouse, comcast, and knology which is rg-6 coaxial cable.  The reason the fios drops out is because your return levels are jacked up. Try and see what leg of the splitter that your fios modem is on and if there is a splitter feeding your tv and modem in your room. All modems should have dedicated outlets run to ensure proper forward/return levels. Also the signal level on the outlet should always be between +10 to -10, no more no less. Also any other internet/modem questions let me know, I install digital cable/phone/internet for a living. PS you can usually check modem signals by going to 192.168.100.1. or 192.168.100.0 in the search bar and it gives levels.

To the original poster, your connection is fine. I also use DSL and I have the same download, but even slower upload and I play online games fine. In fact, I was actually hosting a 8-player (or it might have been 7) Ridge Racer race the other day with no problems.

I would def. get more bandwith.  1.5 mb is not very much for todays gaming.

It's about 5x more than is really needed its plenty for the PS3.  Not everyone lives in a big enough of a city/burb to get higher than 1.5.  Now if your talking PC gaming thats of course different than for the PS3.

it should work fine. My freind has it worse, He has Verizon DSL, NOT FIOS and his download is about 800kb/s and upload is like 200kb/s and he plays fine. It IS better to get faster internet though. O and my freind is playing wireless via G router. I on the other hand have Premium cable/Fiber Optic.

Faster is always better 384kbps upload will work just fine yo are not gonna be a default host but it will work great. Don't let a few people bragging about 5MB and 2MB upload get you down.

I have 857KBps (not kbps) and 61KBps and my room mate plays and hosts MGS4 no problem but we have a 32 dollar package... O_o You should be fine with your connection but like everyone stated don't host and don't go online with anything while gaming online. Best way to make sure that it's giong to be ok, is to give it a try. We can't tell you about circumstances that you don't even know about yet. So give it a try and if you're ok with it, then your fine. If not then upgrade. If you can't then... do what you can.

There are ONLY 2 types on broadband DSL and Cable, fiber opics is not internet it's a type of wiring that ALL DSL companies are moving too. Some have already started others have not. This is why Cable will soon be obsolete, cable uses coaxial which caps at 30 mbps, where fiber caps is 100 mbps. In another year or so you'll see alot cable companies lose alot of customer when the DSL companies start their transition to Fiber.

And for all you guys saying 768kbps is good i don't wanna hear you guys complaining about the PSN store being too slow with that slow speed. Because i know you will.
