Compatible Wireless N Routers for PS3/Xbox 360

15 replies 945 views Edited Mar 14, 2008

Hey everybody.  I am looking into purchasing a new router (preferably a Wireless N Router). Currently, I have a D-Link Gamer Router (DGL-4300, Wireless G).  This is the predicament I'm dealing with...

The most up-to-date firmware for it is 1.7.  Firmware 1.7 is not Xbox Live compatible, but I have to use 1.7 to be able to play avi files on my PS3 from my laptop.  This is the reason why I'm looking to buy a new router (preferably a N router).

Can anyone recommend a good N router that is compatible with both the PS3 and Xbox 360?  What type of N router will give me the best performance for multiplayer gaming and playing files off of my laptop?  Thank in advance for any advice.

N will not help you; The PS3 has G, therefor cannot take advantage of N speed.  Even if it did have N; it would only increase speed on you local LAN...not to the internet(online gaming).

Thanks for the reply.  I've heard that before and assumed that was about right, but I would imagine down the road they will have some kind of firmware updated for both the 360 and PS3 that will support N routers.  They also have N routers that are backwards compatible with G.

Seeing as how my D-Link Router with 1.7 firmware won't support both Xbox Live and PS3, I need to get a new router anyway.  Does anyone have a N router that they've had good experiences with?

no...it's a hardware thing; it will never happen...and G is more than fast enough...it's faster than your internet connection so it wouldn't matter.

Cool.  Are there any special settings that you could recommend I set my router up with in regards to reducing lag for both PS3 and Xbox Live?

Well I don't have any lag issues and I only have 60% signal strength.  I have a Linksys router...used to have a B wireless for 5+ years that I replaced a couple months ago with a Linksys wireless G....and have never had any issues.  My PS3's IP is in the routers DMZ...and again I have never had any issues.  oh...and I disable UPnP and Media Server; no port forwarding because I don't need it(DMZ).

Most N-type router are backward compatible so if you have the money get the N.  No, it will not help you with the PS3 but you will be more future proof going forward.  Hey, the next PC or game console you buy may very well have N-type wifi so you'd be good to go and you won't be any worse off having the N-type router coupled with the PS3 than if you bought a G-type.

I would definitely like to buy a N router. I'm willing to spend up to about $175 if necessary. I always get 3 out of 4 bars on Xbox Live with my current router and it's getting annoying (it's hooked up with a wireless network adapter).  I just want to maximize my signal, reduce lag as much as possible, and be able to play my media off of my laptop on my PS3.
