im having this same issue with 1.82. I called sony and they are sending me out an update disk for free, should be here in about a week. I was able to download the 1.82 update from the au.playstation site but am hesitant to install it. does anyone know if it would work, or should i just wait for the disk in the mail?

Yeah i got the same error! What does the error mean and why do i have to jump through all these hoops just to get online. They should have fixed these bugs -  I mean i paid 600 bucks for this!? Now the best solution is for me to buy a usb memory stick? Spend more cash? Or wait 1 week for them to send me the data that i cant download for who knows why... i'm sorry if i sound a little pissed, but its because I am.

What exactly is the error? Is there any other work around? Any one know why it's occurring?

Thanks in advanced

Everyone here looks like they recently got the PS3.  You shouldn't have to do all this.  Also, why did you connect the PS3 to your computer with a USB cable?  Anyway, you can either download the update and copy it over with any USB device (thumb-drive, ipod enabled for disk use, etc.) or you can try something else.

If you just want to download it and copy it over to the PS3, go here: http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Network/Updates

Otherwise, check your internet settings & make sure they are correct.  TEST them out.  Also, if you want to use wireless - ok - but for these updates since it is your first time, I would recommend using a WIRED connection.

Just so ya know - you don't have to jump through hoops.  I never had a problem downloading updates, worked first try.  So don't assume it's the hardware and not an operator error.  Conversely, I agree they should make it easier for people who don't understand all the settings.

It wont brick ur PS3 , will just give an error

Getting the same problem. I gave up on trying to dl the update on the PS3, and i've DL'd it on the PC  - or atleast i thought i did. Turns out i've only dl'd 69MB, short of the 110MB its supposed to be... it seems that i'm getting the boot from the sony side prematurely during the transfer (no matter which method i use), probably due to increased traffic fromthe price drop. Best solution would be if someone post the update somewhere where we can get it???? Otherwise i'll try early in the morn - quite frustrating to say the least.

I found an alternative site to get the system software. I've downloaded all 110+ Megs so if you are having problems with the official site this site seems to work fine: http://www.centerzone.it/component/option,com_docman/Itemid,0/task,doc_details/gid,177/
Dont forget to make the directory structure on your portable media: PS3/UPDATE/ then put the .pup file in there. Make sure it's 110MB. I'm updating right now and so far it seems to work. The main site seems to time me out, i'm betting because of an influx of new PS3 owners... hope that helps... well i just heard the ps3 boot tone, so i think that's that. good luck!

60Hz, your link was kewl.  The firmware downloaded at the correct filesize and it works!  I'd give u Kudos but that's on Xbox...

SO EVERYONE USE THAT LINK TO DL THE 1.82 FIRMWARE if you're having trouble.

StalkingSilence, your lecture about connecting cables and disdain for those struggling sucked.  You're a **bleep** and should get off the forum.

The PS3 really doesn't need you.  Go to Xbox and alienate people there.
