Hi PlayStation Community,

 

This is the FAQ for the PlayStation Network (PSN) section of the North American PlayStation Support Forums, created by Support MVP member @Dead-Sync.

 

This FAQ is meant to answer and give links to basic and commonly asked questions about PlayStation Network and its features.

1) How do I create a PSN Account?

(If you are setting an account up for a child who is under 18, you will need to create a Sub-Account for them. Click here to learn how to create a Sub-Account.)

 

 

2) How do I change my password or recover it if I forgot it?

See this page for information changing your password

 

 

3) How do I change my email / sign-in ID?

You can visit Sony Account Management and go to Account > Account Details and click "Edit" under Identity. You can also change your email from your PlayStation console via PSN Account Management.

 

 

4) How do I change my PSN ID (username)?

Unfortunately, your PSN ID cannot be changed once it has been created. If you wish to have a different PSN ID, you would need to create a new PSN account

 

 

5) How do I turn a Sub-Account into a Master Account?

You can upgrade a Sub-Account when the account owner is 18 years of age or older. Click here to learn how to upgrade your account.

 

 

6) How do you activate a console?

You need to activate from the console itself. Click one of these to learn more:   PS4 | PS3 | PS VITA

 

 

7) How do you deactivate a console?

  • If you still have the console, you can deactivate from the console itself. Click one to learn more: PS4 | PS3| PS VITA
  • If you don't have the console anymore but know the serial number, you can fill out this Deactivation Request Form
  • If you don't have the console anymore and don't know the serial number, you can deactivate all of your PlayStation consoles using this method
    (Note that you can only perform "Deactivate All" once every 6 months.)

 

 

8) How do I change the country / region of my PSN account?

Unfortunately the country set for your PSN account cannot be changed once it has been created.

 

If you wish to select a new country, you will need to create a new PSN Account.

 

 

9) I am from region X, can I play a game from region Y? Can I download DLC from region Y to play with region X?

Disc based games are region free. However, it is recommended that you purchase games from your region.

 

Downloadable Content (DLC) is not region free and is tied to the country/region of your PlayStation Network Account.

 

 

10) Where can I find more information regarding my ban or suspension?

1) I am unable to connect to the internet or PSN. What do I do?

First, check the status of PSN. If all services are up and running, you can click here to go over some troubleshooting steps for your network connection. If some services are experiencing problems, you may need to try again later when services have been restored.

 

 

2) My network connection seems slow or laggy. How can I improve my connection?

3) I am receiving an error code. What does it mean?

Click here to go to the PlayStation Support home page. Type your error code in the search as it appears on your PlayStation.
