Here's the reason passwords were changed.

10 replies 628 views Edited Nov 27, 2013

Yesterday i tried to log onto psn to get my Killzone Mercenary fix and got the same error message allot of people got. Incorrect password. I checked out this forum and although i didn't learn why it happened, i did learn that it happened to many people. So i was going to simply change my password. My problem though is the email associated with my account is about 10 years old and there's no way ill ever remember the password to receive the email from Sony to change it. And this actually had to do with why so many people had their passwords forcibly changed.

I spoke a while with a psn representative and this is what he said:

With the release of PS4 many emails have been sent out to psn users. What happens is after a long time, if many emails sent from Sony arent marked read or replied to over time the system including many new failsafes (ie. installed after the recent hacker attack on psn) assumes this as unusual activity and automatically resets the users password to protect the account and personal information such as address and billing info. All at once the system checked the activity of all users emails and changed passwords of accounts with inactive email addresses.

This may make sense because at first i believed it to have affected 100% of users in which i was later told it was only roughly about 1/3. Now this could be the reason, it may not be. Im just passing on what i was told by psn employees.

This cant possibly be true. I check my email daily, and I open on average about 1 email from sony a day. I was one of the ones that had their password changed so it had nothing to do with not checking their emails.

It could be true, because it is a very flawed idea.  Considering how often Sony's e-mails end up in spam folders, assuming that the e-mail was not opened because it was sent to an inactive mail account is a poor assumption, and probably accounts for why so many PSN users had their passwords reset for no apparent reason. Some mail systems also only support the return receipt protocol for known correspondents as a security feature.  Sony may need to pay a little more for its security expertise next time.

May I ask how you got your account working again if you had no email to retrieve your password. The email I have is fake and I cannot change it. I'm terrified of losing all my data.

Simple. I called psn support line. (1800-345-7669) They can change youre password for you and even change the associated email address to a current active one. If theres one thing i can say about Sony in my pesonal exerience is their costomer service is top notch.
Granted yesterday the hold time was over an hour but today it way about fifteen minutes. I hear you can also go to us.playstation.com/helpme and use the live chat option to talk directly with an employee and get the same issue resolved.

As for the topic above, yes the reason i was given does sound unlikely. I dont claim it to be 100% true. Im just relaying what i was told by someone who works at Sony.

It cant' be true. I for one dont' have a fake email and I check it daily. I had no email from Sony about the PS4, and nothing in Spam from them either......... This is  a crock of b.s. they're feeding you. They can't just reset someone's account because you don't read an email, they need a better reason then that. In fact i JUST checked my email after writing this post. There WAS ONE email from Sony in my spam..... their notice that they had already changed my password rofl...... nothing about the PS4, just that.

I was thinking the other night..... I haven't posted on here in quite a long time until recently. Not long after that this happens..... making me wonder if all the people affected also post on here. Someone could've gotten PSN names to try to hack just by looking at recent poster's names on here. That's my thought.... but their explanation to you is a load of crock in my opinion.

I don't see that either. I have never been here until I tried to play online and I saw my password was changed. Last night was the first time I logged onto this site.

well that blows my theory out of the water, thankfully lol..... I was kinda nervous about continuing to post on here. Reason WAS this thread: http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-Network-Support/Sony-wallet-credited-3-times-by-5... , except I just noticed the first post was  over a month ago.

Course I blew Sony's "theory" out of the water, so we still have no clue as to why. If they had sent out emails................. actually you know what? I'm not sure if I got an email about the release of the PS4 or not now that I think about it. I've read so much crap since it released i don't know lol...... so if that was true...... they shouldnt' be f'ing with people's accounts simply because we don't read an email. That's just stupid.

Hey I'm with you on that brother. But seriously no statement will probably be made telling us why so in case it was a lagitimate security issue, I sudgest everyone reading this to log on psn and wipe out you're billing information. At least until the water settles. Remember millions of users credit cards were compromised the last time something happened.

I'll search for the link again. But Sony Japan posted news. They were attacked again. There is a large amount of accounts that had funds added to their wallet and Fifa points and subs purchased.
