Re: DNS error 80710102 resolved

Dec 28, 2007
I have a Linksys router (LOVE IT!) and was having the DNS error problem.  The PS3 seemed to recognise the network but would not connect to the internet.  I checked my wireless network in windows by:
start
    my network places
        set up wireless network
        - it gave me the option to add new computers to the existing network

I skipped any changes but printed the network settings and I realised I had been using the wrong WEP key on the PS3! (yet the PS3 reported sucess at connecting to (a) network)

Hope this helps,
Jim

Re: DNS error 80710102 resolved

Dec 30, 2007
For all you guys having trouble connecting your ps3 to a router, especially if you have problems with WEP: I had this problem myself. I could not connect the ps3 to the router (wireless) and obtain an ip-adress when WEP encryption was enabled (I use 128bit wep). I was, however, able to connect it with the router if I disabled the WEP encryption on the router. I wanted to keep WEP-encryption, though, so I did some experimenting. I tried to use a fixed IP-address instead of obtaining one from the router, but then I got the DNS error that so many have reported in this thread.

So, to the solution (my solution at least, not sure if it will work for you, but it's worth a try): I noticed that you couldn't type in the WEP key # at the ps3. I used WEP key # 3 on my router and there was no way I could tell that to the ps3. I therefore changed the configuration of my router and set it to use WEP key #1. That did the trick - now the ps3 connects to the router! (I chose the option to obtain an IP-address from the router.)

Hope this is of help...

To fix my DNS issue this will help you Link Sys people. After countless hours of pulling my hair out,  I stumbled onto this preferred DNS like answerdan has listed.  So you take those numbers and on the setup screen of your router you place them in the Static DNS section 1 & 2
then click update to save changes. when you go to create a wireless connection on your PS3 you put

IIP Address: 192.168.1.103 ( you should get up to 50 with you ISP)
Sub net: 255.255.255.0
Defualt router: 192.168.1.1
Primary DNS: 4.2.2.1
Second DNS: 4.2.2.2
(this is how you're PS3 entered manually should look)

(These go into your router)
Primary DNS: 208.67.222.222
Second DNS:208.67.220.220

Then for security setup your WPA- Personal not WAP with a password that you know in your router than again when it asks you on the PS3 setup,  and it should work as a button

My setup is a wired Link Sys BEFS41 with Airport Express and iMac G5 and a Cable Modem. Hope this helps

You can use 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 there also.
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
4.2.2.4
4.2.2.5
Are all public DNS servers and they ALWAYS work.
There is actually a little bug with the PS3 wherein the connection will time out before the secondary nameserver is queried.
