Re: DNS error 80710102 resolved

Feb 23, 2008
Hello! I just purchased a PS3 40 gig on February 17th. I have a Zhone DSL modem and a Linksys Wireless-G router and I was having a problem connecting it to the internet wired and/or wireless.  Most times I could get the PS3 connected, but it would cause a conflict with my desktop computer and bump my router and computer off the connection and then the PS3 would time out and disconnect from the internet. After snooping around on here a bit, I found several solutions to try. I have above average experience with computers but I had a hard time figuring out the problem. So, in frustration I came here to the boards for help and as I said; I found several solutions to choose from.  Most of the time I got this same 'DNS 80710102' error message along with others.

I turned off my desktop computer and then I hooked my PS3 back up and selected 'Wired' (I was going to return the PS3 and exchange it for a new one) and tried the simplest solution I found first, which involved disabling the 'Media Server' option in 'Network Settings'. I went back in to the 'Internet Settings' and selected 'Easy' and let the PS3 do its thing. I was able to get on the internet and as of this morning, there have been no problems. My friend was having the same problem with his PS3 and I told him about the fix and after disabling the 'Media Server' option, he has had no problems connecting. I turned my desktop back on and it connects just fine now...no conflicts. Also, after disabling the 'Media Server' option, I noticed that my desktop showed that the Linksys wireless monitor had become the default wireless monitor. Prior to this I was using the Windows XP wireless monitor for my connection. This may have contributed to the PS3 connection problem. Changing from the Windows monitor to the Linksys monitor may be another option to try. Who knows?

I realize everyone's internet access and providers are different and this may not be the fix for everyone, but before anybody tries to go in and reset or change their modem or router settings (which I had planned on doing before I found the 'Media Server' option) this fix may remedy your PS3 internet connecting problem without noodling with router/modem hardware settings and creating a bigger mess for yourself. Kudos and props to the folks that have posted solutions in regard to router/modem settings as their posts were available to me and I had plenty of options to try if this simple solution didn't work.

I am currently using my laptop now and my desktop and PS3 are all connected to the internet, and there are no conflicts. Everything's working fine.

Hey guys, I have the same problem that you have all been having. I am terrible with computers so can someone help me!!!!!!!!! I have a Linksys Wireless-N Router. The ps3 finds my IP address but then straight away the internet connection says failed. I know this is something to do with the way I have set things up so all suggestions are welcomed.

Cheers

Disable the 'Media Server' option on the PS3 and try connecting again.

Like others, I too have this problem.  I manually enter my IP address, DNS address etc., then I test the connection.  It finds the IP address put it gives me an error:

"An error has occurred during communication with the server.

This is a DNS error (80710102)."

I have a Netgear router.

I have looked at other threads but nothing seems to work.

well, I fixed mine. I reset my modem, reinstlled all the software for it, and then shut it and my cable modem off for the night. next morning I turned on the cable modem, the router about 20 minutes later, then the ps3 and laptop. now it all works fine. I think it was all the router in the long run, since my laptop was having trouble as well.  hope that helps anyone with the same issue

start by unplugging your wireless router and modem it is hooked to. do it before you head off to bed and start them back up in the morning. start with the modem and then, after a little while, plug the router in.  try that and let us know the results. hopefully it is that easy!  good luck!
