First thing I always try is a hard reset.
Press the power button and HOLD IT DOWN.
The system may power cycle (turn on then turn off)
If it does just let go and press and hold it again. You'll hear 1 beep when it comes on, another beep for the video rest, then 2 fast beeps which will bring you to the systems menu. Select the third option this will not delete any saves it just checks the HD for errors...
Somehow the hard drive having errors messes up the blu ray drive. Any way...If it finds errors it will fix them and it may fix your disc read problem. If not then a new drive runs between $40 and $80 on line and all you have to do is put your blu ray drive circuit board on your new blu ray drive and it will work. The new drive must match your systems model number...VERY IMPORTANT that you match the model number else it will not WORK.
I work on these systems every day. I just replaced a PS3 drive on a system I bought for $40 and it plays like a champ. Hope this helps.
