If all your game data is gone then it Sound like you chose the option not NOT TO SELECT: "RESTORE PS3 SYSTEM"

Now this is important, "DO NOT CLICK ON 'RESTORE PS3". That will wipe the hard drive clean. You don't want that.

A) "Rebuild PS3 Database" (this might take a little time be patient).

B) "Restore PS3 File System" (your bootup code, restoring is almost instant).

PLEASE NOTE:

These two options will not delete any content on your HDD, but it will nuke all your sent and received messages as well as music playlists you have, and if you edited track information on any mp3s, say you renamed them all to something less ambiguous than "track 01", the names and other altered data will revert. (seriously, get a keyboard) For any messages you want to save, I would suggest sending them to another account you have, then send them back later.

Well I'll try. My best advice is just to keep waiting. It can take a long time depending on how much data you have on the drive.

I don't know the size of my HDD but what's the longest it can take? My ps3 has been at the preparing screen for 12 hours now.

My Playstation has been stuck on "Preparing" for over 12 hours.  Did yours eventually stop?

I'm wondering if I should unplug it and start over???

Its dependent on the amount of games, pics, music, videos you have on your system..
