What is a noob?

30 replies 377 views Edited Aug 23, 2013
I have wondered this question for a long time. I think my definition of a noob is different than other. I am wondering what everyone defines as a noob?

Noob or N00b stands for a 'Newbie' AKA someone new. Nothing more although people tend to just throw it around as an insult

I have heard it argued that different spellings intone different attributes to the word, ranging from indifferent to troll and pervert. I take the stance that words have whatever meaning the people using and hearing them decide that they have. Words are fluid and ever evolving.

This particular word is at a crossroads. Some view it as harmless while others apply very negative thoughts and images onto it. It is for this reason, that I generally avoid its use, to avoid confusion. I will just say someone is new, instead. No point in starting an argument, hurting someone's feelings, or leaving a bad impression, for the sake of attempting to use word that is in flux. That's just my opinion, though. I could be wrong. Seeing as this has been posted onto the home forum, the Home meaning of a noob or a "Default" is someone without purchased clothing, who also happens to be new.

I've always assumed newb/newbie is a new person, and noob would be the same but within a derogatory form.

Wrong. I have a friend who's been on Home for years who just spent their first dime a few months ago.

See what I have always defined a noob as is someone who doesn't buy anything and only comes on home to troll. Someone that is new I just call them new.

I like the word "New" myself.
