Re: Is HOME going to b availible on ps4?

Jun 14, 2013

Since Home is FREE to play and PS4 u can't play online at All for FREE!  I don't see Home ever coming to PS4 due to that alone!

SHAME on SONY for making us HOMEless by Closing our PS HOME!

Home does need a fresh, new look. Hopefully, Sony will figure something out for the PS4.

Re: Is HOME going to b availible on ps4?\

In business, no news is seldom good news. There are two primary reasons why news isn't forthcoming:

1. It's bad, and they're waiting for Friday at 5:30 to release it.

2. They haven't even thought about it, which means it's not a priority.

Anyone who can read between the lines of what's happened with Home in the last couple of months should be able to see things clearly: Home, in its current form, is not planned for the PS4, at least as far as Sony is concerned. There are a number of signals that point to this:

1. A lack of support from major game publishers.

2. Continued softness in customer support.

3. The realignment of the HCV and MVP programs.

4. Departures and reassignments for Home's core NA team (all who remain are now Digital Platforms, of which Home is a small component)

5. A major Home developer building its own virtual world.

6. A major Home developer building a game publishing platform.

7. No mention at E3.

8. No news from management, either to the userbase or the development community.

That said, there are still some significant projects in the works, so it's not as if Home will end tomorrow, but there is neither evidence of a plan to take it to the PS4 nor any additional effort to shore up the issues it currently has. Could it be lost in the shuffle with all of the preparations for the PS4? Possibly, but that would just mean it's not a priority, and that's never a good sign.

In the near term, this shouldn't mean much to anyone. Home will continue at least until the end of the year and likely beyond, as the PS3 will be viable well into 2014. Sony won't be able to make PS4s fast enough to keep up with demand and it will likely be Summer 2014 before production can keep pace with demand. During that time, Sony clearly intends to support the PS3, which means the current PSN will still be running and Home will be on our XMBs.

After that, things get murky. Once the PS4 install base grows to a certain point and users become focused on its games and features, support for Home is likely to decline. There will always be Home fans who make a point of using the service, but the number of potential new users is capped when the PS4 arrives. Sony's job will be to sell PS4, not to encourage more people to get on PS3. Once the potential for growth disappears, there is little reason to maintain a business.

Home in its current form could move to the PS4, but it's far too dated to be viable. It is far more likely that a third-party developer will create a virtual world that taps the PS4's capabilities, delivering many of the things we enjoy about Home without its current limitations. I could see Lockwood or Granzella going this route, though perhaps without the third-party developer support that Home currently enjoys.

Another possibility is that someone will take over Home in its current form from Sony and bring it to the PS4. If there are no competing virtual worlds on the PS4 horizon, it might be viable, especially if it could be acquired inexpensively. This is far less likely than a developer building their own virtual world.

The least likely possibility, based on what's been reported so far, is that Sony will develop a new Home for the PS4. They simply seem to be moving in a different direction and focusing on user-to-user communication as a native function of the system, rather than something that's done through an app.

Home has proven that a social platform for gamers can be viable, but it's not the killer app that Sony needs to justify continued support. It's greatest value as a business lies in its ability to showcase smaller studios and host particular types of game experiences, such as the Casino, Project Velocity, No Man's Land, etc. It also could be an excellent interface for arcade games and smaller independent games, if issues with connectivity and loading times could be addressed.

To survive, Home, or any virtual world, needs to address the following two questions:

1. Does it generate enough revenue to justify continued investment?

2. Will it help a third party developer sell more games?

Placed alongside games, Music Unlimited and the PSN Store, Home does not meet the first criteria for Sony. It's not even in the ballpark, which would make it very easy for business developers to write it off. Most of the lost revenue, they would argue, would simply migrate to other parts of the service. Some customers will be lost, which is inevitably the cost of change.

On the second point, Home has arguably been successful. Enough so for Granzella or Lockwood to launch their own virtual world? Time will tell. Social gaming is hot right now, and virtual communities provide a good entry point for all manner of social games.

It's always been a question of when Home will shut down. The good news for now is that it should be secure into early 2014. By that point, we'll either know what's coming or we'll have some alternative on the PS4 that's so cool we all want to use it.

I'm wondering about the possibility of Home running on the Cloud service Gaikai which Sony purchased in 2012. Gakai had announced partnerships with a lot of big developers prior to its purchase by Sony.

In a recent core update user data was moved to the cloud. It might be possible for Home, along with many other PS3 games and applications to run in the cloud on PS4.

We don't know how much it currently costs to maintain the Home infrastructure globally, but if Home generates enough revenue to pay for maintenance it might be possible for it to live on as a cloud service.

Very well thought out post, HiW. I feel the same way about the whole thing.
I can honestly see the Home community splintering off into various factions as it were and moving on to some of the other F2P games and MMO's hitting PS3 and PS4 and Sony mobile platforms (Android etc.). Here's a list of current and planned on PS3/4 and other:

*FFXIV
*Destiny
*Planetside 2
*DCUO
*TES Online
*Tekken Revolution
*Drive Club+ Edition
*Avakin games
*Warframe

A fair few alternatives, though not the same.

Jersquall: Any new news on Home on PS4 yet?

Tempest_Fire: Due to a shifting landscape, PlayStation Home will cease publishing new content on November 12, 2014.

Most of them are very good alternatives, I might add.

I would however say DCUO is one of them games, if you don't grind constanly, or at least pay a membership.

You miss out on a lot. From my personal experience, it just seem too repetitive for me.

I do feel that FFXIV is a good alternative though.

I can see myself doing the basics in FFXIV then hanging out in one of the cities, only taking part in the occasional quest with a group. It's what I did in FF11.

It has been made clear management knows only one thing. Home continues as is on PS3. If and when it goes to PS4 then they will let the community know I guess.

''If I were unable to talk about it how could I talk about it to confirm or deny!?  Sorry, too tempting.

We don't comment because there's nothing to share. I know that sounds lame, but it's a fact.  There is nothing new about this topic to share at this time, so we don't have any comments. -Tempest_Fire http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-Home/Upcoming-Home-Content/td-p/40691787/page/2

I sent a PM to TF asking for some sort of public notice be featured/Stickied and he seemed to be fine with the forum post reply quoted above by saying "I just did''. I don't care for the brush off and snarky one liners. Respect lost.

I guess the question will remain. fresh minds and new ideas are a thing of the past it seems. The business side has over taken Home. enjoy it on PS3 and maybe on PS4? sure. I will. but I will miss the old days and so will you.

Well the good thing about this is, FF probably won't be as limited, compared to home in the social department.

It has the same feel sort of, chat log wise. But other than that, there's really no similarities. Plus, character customization seems better in FFXIV, personally.
