I may be done with Home AND Sony (the latest Home freeze damaged my console).

I was attempting to download the new Xi space, but the download didn't progress past 46%.  It was stuck there for a half hour (after I started the download I took my dog for a walk for a half hour, when I got back it was still at 46%).  I then canceled the download and restarted it to see if that would jump-start it.  The console freezes when I canceled the download.  I was forced to power my console down by pressing the power button on the console itself.  It's always a bad sign, when you can't hold the PS button to power the console off and you need to hard-reset it.  That means something needs to be restored.

Sure enough, when my PS3 boots back up, I see a message telling me my file system is corrupted and needs to be restored.  After 20 minutes, the restoration process ends and... I sit at a blank black screen FOREVER.  I assume forever because don't know how long it's supposed to sit at the black screen, but if it's not longer than 10 seconds, something is ****ing wrong.  I'm not going to sit there another 20 minutes at a blank black screen that's supposed to be my system restarting but really it's not doing anything.

I tried the power button.  Nothing.  Tried the PS button the controller.  Nothing.  My system was powered on but I was at a black screen, and it wouldn't go away.  I have to UNPLUG my console and plug it back in to get it to stop.  When I start my system up... RESTORATION PROCESS ONCE AGAIN.

I'm currently at the blank black screen again at the end of the restoration process and nothing is happening.  I'm in an infinite loop of this **bleep**.

Thanks Sony for making a ****ty console, and thank you Home devs for making a shoddy, glitchy service that put me in this mess that I'm in now.

Thanks to nDreams and the new Xi, my PS3 froze during Xi's download process and put me in a perpetual loop of file restorations every time I start up my PS3. I can no longer play Playstation Home or any of my PS3 games. 600+ dollars spent on Home content, down the ****ing drain. I'm done with Playstation Home, I'm done with Sony, and I'm done with this site, as my current PS3 situation no longer warrants my being here. Bye everyone.

Booting into Safe Mode might be worth a shot if nothing else works. You would likely want to start with Menu Option 3

From: http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3/How-to-access-Playstation-3-SAFE-MODE/td-p/5812...

What is Safe Mode and how do I enable it on my PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system?

Safe mode is a feature for starting the PS3™ system with the "minimum required functionality" if the system is no longer able to start up normally due to an action was taken (such as turning off the system's MAIN POWER switch while data was being written to the hard disk drive). By starting up the system in safe mode then executing a menu option, you may be able to eliminate the symptom. Please note there is a chance that safe mode options will not fix the problem and you system will require service.

We do not recommend using the options in Safe Mode unless you are experiencing issues with the PLAYSTATION 3.  Some of these options could result in loss of data.

If you choose to perform one of the Safe Mode options, please back up your data before attempting to enter safe mode (when possible).

Safe Mode is only available to PS3's with system software 2.60 or greater installed.

 When to Use Safe Mode

Execute safe mode when the PS3™ is experiencing the following symptoms:

  • When the PS3™ system is started up, the XMB™ menu is not displayed (only the wave screen background appears)
  • When the PS3™ system is started up, nothing appears on the screen
  • When the PS3™ system is started up, a message stating is displayed > > Restore operation > Restart
Original message is displayed again or the system stops during restoration.
  • When the PS3™ system is started up, a message stating is displayed > > Rebuild > Failure > System stops while formatting hard disk drive.
  • The system stops while restarting after a PS3™ system update or while updating or rebuilding the database. The situation does not improve even when the system is restarted.

Safe Mode Options

In Safe Mode, you will have the following options:

  1. Restart System - Ends safe mode and starts up the PLAYSTATION 3 normally.
  2. Restore Default Settings - Performs the same operations as on the XMB™, and also deletes PlayStation®Network account information from the system.
  3. Restore File System - Attempts to repair all areas on the hard disk drive where files can be saved. Corrupted data may be erased if it cannot be recovered.
  4. Rebuild Database - Deletes messages, playlists, changes made on screens, trimming information for pictures in , video thumbnails, video playback history and video resume information.
This operation may take a long time depending on the type and number of data items.
  5. Restore PS3 System - IMPORTANT: All data will be lost by performing this step.
This will reformat the hard drive on the PLAYSTATION 3, deleting all data and restoring it to as if it just came out of the box. This is the same as on the XMB.
  6. System Update - Updates the PS3 system software. This can only be done with an update file already saved on an external storage media.

Activating Safe Mode

Step 1: Turn off the PLAYSTATION 3 by holding the Power button on the front of the unit till the Power light is red.

Step 2:

  1. Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the first beep, meaning the PLAYSTATION 3 is powering on.
  2. Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep, indicating the video reset.
  3. Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a third beep and the system will power off (Power light is red).

Step 3:

  1. Touch and hold the Power button, you will hear the first beep, again for the PLAYSTATION 3 to power on.
  2. Continue to hold the Power button and after about 5 seconds, you will hear a second beep for video reset.
  3. Continue to hold the Power button and after about another 5 seconds you will hear a quick double beep.  At that point release the Power button.  If you succeeded in activating Safe Mode, you will see a message on the screen saying, "Connect the controller using a USB cable and then press the PS button."

that seriously sucks. try the safe mode as posted above, if no luck call Sony. they are generaly good with replacing a damaged system.

and im pretty familiar with Home issues and PS3 issues. i still consider Home to be the primary factor into my first 3 YLOD PS3s. when something serious goes wrong with Home, it takes everything else down with it.

also, a few days ago Home froze durring a cache clear and it resulted in the Home program on the XMB being corrupt. tried to delete it only to run into the error in which a file cant be deleted. was forced to reformat my PS3. aside from losing all my downloaded games and instal data(i had backed up my saves) it also took a freaking hour to re-sync my trophy data to the system aslo.

Well I suspect restoring the system by reformatting etc will do it but hopefully that doesn't become necessary because you'd lose all your save files etc.

Good luck.

:^/ I had to do this too, recently. I ended up having to reformat the hard drive and restore from a backup on an external drive. Unfortunately, the backup was about a year ago....

I backup more often now.

I entered Safe Mode, selected Restore FIle System, and it's been stuck at "Preparing... Please Wait." for a while.  Nothing's happening.

I understand it taking time WHILE restoring, but not when it's preparing to restore.
