Re: Home is being represented on Maxim!

Apr 11, 2012

I believe Maxim is looking for a gaming girl with looks, personality, and gaming skills so it shouldn't be about one over the other but all of that should be taken into account. But yes, I can see why you would feel the way you do, and you are not alone there. To be honest, I have not really looked at any of the other girl entries except for a couple of my friends, but some of my other friends have told me about some girls that have entered who match your description. The photos I posted are from my modeling portfolio which I think are professional and done in good taste. I have never comprimised my morales in my modeling career and never will.  Personal pics of me, my freinds, and family can be found in the links provided in my Maxim profile.

As far as gaming skills are concerned, I'll admit that I actually only have 1 platinum trophy and am only level 7. I haven't had much time to play games lately and have had a lot going on with PS Home with all the groups that I am in and all the events/shows in which I participate.  Furthermore, I would consider myself a casual gamer, not a hard-core one.  My real life schedule is very hectic with my family, school, and work.  But I have always loved playing video games.  I do agree with harley7, and don't think that the number of platinum trophies you have defines your skills as a gamer.  I may not have a lot of platinum trophies, but I think I can hold my own in many games. I think it is about the passion you have for games, not necessarily your accolades, that defines you as a gamer. I love to game, but I also love PS Home and as a social/gaming network, that is one of my primary areas of representation for this competition. That is what I intend to speak to in interviews during the competion.  The 1st round is based on public votes, after that, it will be closed judging.  Regardless, I still can see why one would think the way you do but that has nothing to do with what I stand for in the competition.

KrystiPride, one of the finalists for The Tester 3, who is a also a model and gamer, wrote a really good article about the competition. She had reservations about entering for reasons that echo many of your voiced sentiments: http://krystipryde.com/2012/04/05/maxim-magazine-wants-a-girl-gamer/#respond  I encourage you to read it.  She decided to enter anyways to see what happens. And the same goes for me. Modeling is what I do for a living and I thought that this was a great opportunity that brings together what I do for a living with my passion for games.  I know there are contestants that are using antics which may seem wrong, but I believe that my motives for this are pure and good. I do want to represent the PS Home Community the best way I can and have some fun while doing it.

That all being said, I don't expect everyone to support me in this competition, but I do see many people who are and that is both very much appreciated and enouraging for me.  I hope to do the PS Home Community as well as my friends and family proud in this competition.

Thanks again to everyone's ongoing support here. Much love to you all! <333 Muahz!

Trophies have nothing to do with skill so don't feel bad about being a level 7 and having 1 platinum. Remember that how you play the game is more important than the trophies themselves. Also, people have been gaming long before trophies exited so trophies in no way, shape or form can vouch for decades worth of gaming experience. Good luck with Maxim. You deserve that award just as much as any other girl in that competition.

I noticed that Triplethreat is also running. Didn't expect to see as many many familiar faces as I did, nor to find out they all model lol

Personally, I'm voting for krystiepryde because I followed her links and love that she wrote an article -as you just pointed out- on girl gaming and the sexism that sometimes occurs. But as she states we girls gamers should stick together and I wish you well on the contest also You definitely have the looks required for the magazine and a lot going on concerning games and Home.

Sorry I haven't been making statements on here but I just havnent been able to. The reason I chose to support TBABY more than anyone else is because out of what I have read she is the one who supports Home the most. War princess doesn't even reconised the ps3 in her talk so why would I support her? True this is about being a gamer but I am biased to supporting those from the ps3 community, even more so those who rep Home. As far as trophies representing how good a gamer is, horseradish! When Home came out many people went from gaming hardcore to playing on Home hardcore and gaming casually, including me. My trophy level is 14 with only 3 platinums and I rarely play games at all anymore. Also just because a person is on Home more than playing games doesn't mean they are not a gamer. I know pleanty in Home who can take on the most hardcore gamer, so that's all horseradish!

GO TBABY!

The person who wrote that mag is issuing the whole point. This is to find the hottest woman in gaming, not the best female gamer. I personally like this contest because not even a week before this was brought to my attention I had a co worker downing all female gamers. He stated they are all fat slobs, not ne female gamer is even halfway pretty, they are just like the male gamers, fat

Any slobs who live in their parents basement flappin off to virtual video game men. So yes, this contest was a breath of fresh air punching that guy in the face wi the force of gale force winds! As for his comment of there not being a video game contest for sexy men who play video games, I'm sure certain mags would love to do that, shame on them for not doing so. It most certainly would dispell the myth that all of us are fat lazy slobs who sit in our parents basement.

I guess it shouldn't surprise me that a mens' magazine would want to define female gamers according to "hotness" -_-

I know some very good female gamers who deserve to be recognized for their gaming enthusiasm and ability. Not for their "hotness". And looking through those pics, some of those women look like they are auditioning for playboy. I have a female friend who is a level 14 with 14 plats. If she entered I would vote for her, but she wouldn't stand a chance because she doesn't "look right". How many females have been accused of being men in home just because they are good at games? This is just another example of that same sexist attitude.

Oh please.

They aren't choosing the defacto Gamer Girl of the world.

They are choosing the Maxim Gamer Girl.  As such, she must conform to the standards that Maxim has set for the product they are selling, and the demographic they are selling to.

And there is nothing wrong with that.  That is their style and direction.  Much like Vogue has their own style and direction that they adhere to.

I'm sure if Ms. Magazine was crowning a Ms. Magazine Gamer Girl, the criteria would be very different.  Don't go spewing "sexist attitudes" crap just because your feminist media outlets have decided not to recognize gaming, and gamer girls, as worthy of their attention.

News flash, in this day and age, one of the biggest oppressors of women, believe it or not, is other women.

Re: Home is being represented on Maxim!

Apr 11, 2012

I'm on campus and thought I saw some posts in this thread and thought I would say something too.

Yes, I agree that competitions like this may help counter the stereotypes what girl gamers as Chelada said. I know there are probably girls in the competition that don't game at all and so shouldn't be in the competition at all. But I have faith in the judges eliminating them in the next round if they advance. Girls on home have often faced certain stereotypes too. We are thought that just because we use Home, we must not have a life or can't possibly be fit or attractive. The stereotypes work the other way around too. I am a promotional model in real life and have been doing it for 8 years now in Dallas. While I am at work, I face stereotypes of a different kind. Many people assume that I am probably just someone to look at and don't have a head on my shoulders. I am proud to say that I am the first person in my family (and I have a very big family), to go to graduate school, let alone finish college and would like to think I have intelligence. Also, many people who aren't in my line of work, may think it is an easy job.  I assure you that it is not.  It's not just about dressing up and looking good. There is a lot that goes on in the business that you have to deal with and Dallas is extremely cutthroat and competitive. You have to be intelligent with your networking, marketing, etc to be successful. On the job, I have dealt with a lot of abuse too, but you can never lose your cool and always wear a smile on your face because you can't afford to get any bad referrals from any clients. Just like in many businesses, the clients are always right. I had actually addressed a lot of this in an artcle I wrote for HSM (included in my Maxim bio alos): http://www.hsmagazine.net/2011/08/being-true-to-my-real-and-virtual-selves/

I read the article that Eve posted and I can understand the perspective of the author. I hope that Maxim is not trying to say that girl gamers have to look a certain way because I for one of course don't believe that. I do think there are stereotypes for girl gamers as I mentioned before and so one could look at this competition as a way to dispute that.  Like most competitions, it isn't perfect, but for me I think of it more like a beauty pageant for gamers, so it's not all about gaming knowledge or skills. I think that a spokesmodel in any industry should possess the approriate knowledge, look good on camera, and have excellent communication skills. As a promotional model, I do still have a dream of being discovered and making it big. I have never been in a national magazine, only local publications in Dallas. If I win, maybe this could be my one lucky break.  Same goes for being a spokesmodel for Virgin Gaming. That could give me exposure to help me as well. I am not sure how much longer I will do the modeling thing, but that is why I am glad I have my education and can find a job in marketing or start my own modeling agency (my MBA's foucs is on entrepreurial strategy). This is really a means to an end for me and my primary motivation is always for my daughter. I look at her everyday and it gives me inspiration to try harder, even when I am tired and think I have nothing left.

But again, I am also trying to represent the PS Home Community as I don't believe any other girl in the competition is doing that. I know you can't always get the support from everyone in these type of thing, but you do the best you can. Again, I am thankful to get the support from so many differnt groups on PS Home.  PS Home Gazette, GamerIndepth, and PS Source have created plug-ins to my voting page, and I am working with DOD on one for PST too. Looks like AL included one on his website and that is so cool. I am getting support from members of Club Incognito, yourplaystationhome, and playstationhometoday too.  And GW voting for me tops it all   So I hope that with all this support, I am doing something right.

Thanks to everyone for their continued support!

Keep on voting everyone! I've voted several days now, and encourage all of you to as well. Let's get our TBaby out there to represent both the Home community as well as the greater PlayStation one! How cool would that be if she won?!?
