Home delayed?

18 replies 1 views Edited Oct 25, 2008

Tech site Engadget has run a story today describing how renown PS3 hacker “StreetskaterFU” (we’re sure he’s an upstanding member of the community) has made a claim on a popular PS3 hacking site* to have cracked the Home beta client; spilling the riches of Sony’s mythical upcoming online social gaming hub to all asunder.

Apart from the obvious questions this raises regarding the security of Sony’s code, Engadget also posits that the alleged breach may proffer new avenues of infiltration as modders look for the proverbial PS3 philosopher’s stone.  Such control would allow them to install home-brew apps but also purloin games; a fate stable-mate the PSP has historically been plagued with.

With Sony now displaying images of Home in the user registration process we can only assume (again?) that the release of the perpetually delayed service is imminent but how might the above claims affect any impending launch plans?  Would Sony delay it again to patch its security holes or could it be too late? Is the cat out of the bag and the PS3 about to receive some serious haxz0rs?

*Not linked here but (if you’re so inclined) you can locate it quite easily.

Uh, this has been posted at least 4 times today, and at least 6 in the past two days combined.

Short answer:

It should not have an affect for a few reasons, if you want to know them, go check some of those other threads.

This is my first time reading this and I'm gonna go ahead and say; I don't believe it. Even if he did somehow hack HOME, it doesn't mean he hacked the ps3 and I'm sure he won't find out. Besides there's no proof, but just claims.

How does a 0.86 beta hack effect 0.98?  Answer it doesn't  0.98 is totally different and plus, 1.0 beta is coming.  The 0.86 beta is really old and well not effect the release date of Open BetaSmiley Happy

BTW all that hacking for 0.86? lol Really dumb even to hack sony!

This will have no affect on Home seeing as 1.00 is out soon.

This is what Ted (Home Community Manager) wrote in the EU Forums:

How about "this year" then?

Sorry, you dont have too long to wait compared to the length of the project so far, but I know the lack of a date is annoying.

If it helps v1.0 is in internal testing and will hit the closed beta in the coming weeks as will more testers by invitation.

Something I mentioned to the beta testers today is important to remember. 1.0 is a major milestone on our journey but it is not the destination. Think long term beyond Open Beta, theres stuff that will arrive in the few months after Open Beta starts that will really show what Home can bring to you. Some really innovative and clever ideas and some wonderful implementations of the Home vision and, to be blunt, some really fun stuff to do.

Sorry, I'm starting to sound like I'm in marketing now but really, be excited about Open Beta but look well beyond that too.
