[BCAM] Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2011 in PS Home (Still using Folding@Home app!)

143 replies 1046 views Edited Jan 14, 2012

For event listing, jump to reply #1 here: http://community.us.playstation.com/message/36337166#36337166

Also, if you have a BCAM event to add, I'd be happy to list it! See reply #1 for required info.

Hellooo Home community! As many of you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Breast cancer (and all other types of cancer) awareness and research are causes that are near and dear to my heart, and judging by the reception of last year's Ta-tas project, I know many of you feel the same way.

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1331/5164726990_0045ef4b0c_o.jpg

Last year, we made a calendar/XMB wallpapers, computer wallpapers, a comic, a video with the calendar set to music, held a community event and community member Central_Plaza also held a BCAM walk around Central Plaza. We also spread awareness and opened conversations with community members by changing our XMB profile colors and PS Home text colors to light pink, wearing pink clothing(particularly Loot's Save the Ta-tas line and EA Sports/Brees Dream Foundation's pink ribbon Drew Brees jersey), and putting pink bows on our dolphies. In case you missed it, you can view last year's thread here:

http://community.us.playstation.com/message/36336917#36336917

This year, I'd also like to try a few new events and hopefully some of them will have a more tangible effect.

GOALS:

  • To fill PS Home with so much pink that people have to stop and ask what's going on! And then...
  • To open dialouges with community members and spread not only awareness, but also facts about early detection.
  • To get those people to carry that info over into real life and other social networks, especially reminding loved ones to get the appropriate screenings for their age/gender.
  • To provide links to online resources where people can go for more breast health and general cancer information.
  • To encourage people to participate in Folding@Home (now inside the Life with PlayStation application) more often.
  • To encourage more people to donate to reputable charities outside of PS Home. We will NOT ask for any personal or financial information.
  • To remind people that Save the Ta-tas items are still available in the Loot store, and a portion of the proceeds from Save the Ta-tas items go to breast cancer-related charities. Although the full purchase price doesn't go to charity, they are currently the only items in PS Home that fund cancer-related charities at all.
  • To let PS Home content developers know that we'd love MORE items that benefit breast cancer charities, general cancer charities and other charities.
  • To share stories of how cancer has affected our lives and those of loved ones...and to support each other.

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED:

Get informed on breast health and cancer issues so you can pass that knowledge on to others. Most importantly, early detection, which really does save lives. Tell friends, family, significant others, social network contacts and anyone who will listen! I'll add some basic info here later, but 'til then, here are some links to get you started:

Wear pink, wear the Brees Dream jersey, wear Save the Ta-tas clothing and put a pink bow on your dolphy! Use pink text in PS Home, and a pink XMB profile color and add a BCAM-related XMB comment! While this doesn't magically fight cancer, it does draw attention to the issue. Once you have people's attention, you can impart all that fancy knowlege you learned from clicking those links above!

---

Participate in Folding@Home more often (or at all, if you've never used it) particularly in Thursday Morning Fold-a-thons! F@H is a program that enables the smarties at Stanford to use our idle PS3 and computer processors to run protein folding simulations. Incorrectly folded proteins are linked to many types of cancer and ALS, as well as Alzheimer's, Huntingdon's and Parkinson's diseases. Leaving your idle PS3 or computer to run F@H creates a super-computer that could potentially find a CURE for cancer and other diseases.

Folding@Home can now be found in the Life with PlayStation app on your XMB, which is a 125mb download. You can also download and use Folding@Home on your computer. You can track your folding progress, view leaderboards and join folding teams. If you're already an active fold-er and have a team, keep it up and YAY YOU! If you're new to folding and would like to join a team, I've created a new team called Thursday Morning Homies, team #211580. Whether you're a folding noob or vet, I'd like to encourage you to fold a little bit more!

Let's get some Thursday morning Fold-a-thons going! When Home goes down at midnight Pacific or 3am Eastern on Thursday mornings, instead of turning your PS3 off, please use Folding@Home instead!

Donate to reputable cancer-related charities outside of PS Home, such as:

https://www.cancer.org/involved/donate/

https://support.bcrfcure.org/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=14

https://secure.info-komen.org/site/Donation2?idb=0&df_id=5223&5223.donation=form1&scid=1041&itc=emoe...

When planning a donation, you may also want to research how your donations are being spent. Here are a couple sites you may find helpful:

http://www.charitywatch.org/toprated.html#cancer - Lists top-rated charities on a variety of criteria

http://www.bbb.org/charity-reviews/national/ - Actually details how funds are distributed, charities listed alphabetically

Please note: http://www.savethetatas.com is a for-profit business that donates a portion of the proceeds to http://www.savethetatas.org, which is a non-profit. You can donate to the .org and all of it will go to charity, and also be matched by the Concern Foundation. As with any charity, read the fine print to see where your money goes!

---

Contact PS Home developers to let them know we want more items that donate proceeds to charity!

A couple years ago, EA Sports were the first to support a charity on PS Home through their pink ribbon Brees Dreams jersey. If I recall correctly, 100% of the proceeds went to the Brees Dream Foundation, which funds a variety of programs, including one that is cancer-related. Sadly, it is no longer available to purchase. Last year, Loot partnered with Save the Ta-tas to bring us racerback tanks, tees, hoodies, baseball caps and ornaments, and a portion of those proceeds went to charity. Even though 100% wasn't donated, it was still a great variety of items that are still used frequently and help get the message out.

I would welcome new breast cancer awareness items from *any* PS Home content developer! I promise I won't even complain if it's a pink or pink ribbon re-color of an item I already own. I think accessories and active apparel would sell particularly well, but I'd be open to any type of wardrobe items if you have a great idea!

That being said, I would really love it if Lockwood were to release BCAM items in both their regular store AND in the Lockwood Gift Machine. Lockwood is in the unique position to offer both regular-priced clothing for us to buy for ourselves AND low-cost items in their Gift Machine that we can send to lots of our friends. For example: If Lockwood released a pink BCAM wristband for 16 tokens, I could send that wristband to all 100 people on my friends list for about $16 in token bundles! Granted, not everyone on my list uses Home and some of them who do will probably recieve it from other people first, but you see the potential. Contact the Home content devs and let them know what you want!

Take advantage of companies on social media that will make donations for every follow, retweet, "Like" or check-in

Behold, the power of social media! I did some digging, and here are a few accounts to follow on Twitter, pages to "Like" on Facebook or TV shows to check-in to on GetGlue that will benefit breast-cancer related charities.

(BTW, to make it easy for you, each of these is perfectly sized and formatted to be copied and pasted directly to Twitter!)

For every @GetGlue check-in to @TheEllenShow during #BCAM, Michael's will donate $1 to @komenforthecure, up to $20,000!http://getglue.com/stickers/warner_bros_tv/breast_cancer_awareness_month_on_ellen

(For every new follower *AND* retweet of this specific tweet linked below, not this description, @GoBankingRates will donate $1 towards the Soroptomist Club's project of providing "comfort totes" to women undergoing chemotherapy)

Good stuff Stephie. I think it would be neat if the pink wristband was available to buy in Home and then have your avatar wear it.

Great Post Stephie

Lots of good information in it.

I didn't know you could Fold at Home on your computer too.

I will have to set that up. I never turn it off anyways, might as well do something helpful when I am away from it.

Woohoo, a new event! I'll list it now, but I'll also need an update from you with the jump-to person. Do you have enough space on your list to add lots of people who wish to attend, or do you have a dummy account people can use to jump to for the event? Also is FXO your alt account or a club? Apologies if this info is already on that Facebook link, but I don't have/don't want Facebook, so it won't let me read it without logging in.

Sporting pink sneaks, Brees jersey, pink(ish) muttonchops and the same pink text color that I have been using since the original BCAM from 2 years ago.

Eek! I'm cutting it close, but here's my Passion for Pink Fashion - Day 2 pic! Today was game day and the NFL was doing a special tribute to BCAM so I thought it was the perfect day to rock my Brees Dream pink ribbon jersey, enjoy a sub and watch the game at my fave bar...Ta-tas Pub & Grub!

Looking great Stephie!

I'll be sporting a pink PSN ID bar and name color as a start of BCAM

Love that you're going on with the pink dolphy race idea too!
