will there be an update on the MAPS APP?

13 replies 25 views Edited May 5, 2012

I Hope so... ive been thinking about using my vita as a gps. and to be honest it deserves an update. i mean, ive played around it and its decent. its actually not that badd to be honest. the only flaw i found with it is, it doesnt make a sound when u need to make a turn, i mean, it doesnt have to have the lady/male talking to you like a normal GPS would, but atleast a PING! to let us know "look at the vita" would be nice

does anyone else agree?

The maps app isn't designed to provide turn-by-turn directions.

but techniquely, it does act as a GPS.

  • i can set it to take me from point A to point B.
  • \wether if i was to walk/drive, the little arrow would move along with me where ever i go.
  • and it does tell me what road i need to turn on, the only problem is i have to read that part.

so your right, its NOT a GPS. but it acts as if it is one.  so i was just thinking like, why cant we get a little "Ping!" noise so we could atleast look at the vita to see which direction we need to turn, instead of constantly peeking at the vita so you dont miss your turn and/or risk getting into an accident?

and then if u dont like the ping noise you can have an option to turn it on or off.

An app having the option of displaying turn by turn directions in list form does not make it a true GPS device.  You can get the same turn by turn list by searching for directions on a non-GPS equipped computer.

As for a ping to look at your Vita while you are driving is a bad idea.  You should keep your eyes on the road.  Any other activity while you are driving is considered a distraction, and in many states, is also considered a moving violation.  The intention of directions in list form is to basically memorize your entire drive before you pull out of your driveway, and to refer to if you get lost (safely park your car or pull over in a safe place to check your directions).

whats all this talk about a true GPS? The 3g Vita has a gps receiver in it. This isn't a imaginary GPS this a genuine GPS receiver inside of the vita.

Djezc - You must own the wifi model of Vita's because my map app is a GPS it updates the map as I drive through town.

BBurgSteve - I'm wondering what your definition of a "true GPS device" is? Maybee you should go down to the library and check out the definition of a GPS and get back at me. Be sure to keep your seat belt buckled in, and keep the radio off I hear people get distracted while driving with the radio.

Jimm West I didn't know so many people are living in lala land, yes the map app could use an update, I mean my 3g vita has actual GPS hardware in it! (source=http://us.playstation.com/psvita/tech-specs/)

Technically, your 3G Vita has actual aGPS (assisted GPS) hardware in it.  That is, it can tell you where you are, as long as you have an internet connection to load your local map with.

By 'true GPS device' I mean like a Garmin or Tomtom or even an iPhone running a TBT Navigation App (MotionX, Waze, TeleNav, etc).

Google Maps is exactly that: A Maps App.  It is not intended as a TBT Navigation tool, and I doubt it will ever get such an update.

The Maps apps on Androids and iDevices are simple maps, as well, and do not provide verbal turn by turn directions.  There are separate apps for that purpose, as mentioned above.

That is not saying that someone won't create a TBT Navigation app for the Vita, but the Google Maps app isn't it.

All the Maps app is, Is Google Maps like the one on the Ipod touch/iPhone. It wont be upgraded to a GPS app cause as far as im aware google doesnt do that yet.

BUT

I think it'd be totally cool for a GPS application to be developed for the Vita.

to be fair, this is why he was saying for the Vita to 'speak" to you with turn by turn directions speaking to you.
