Re: will there be an update on the MAPS APP?

May 7, 2012

from what ive experienced myself and from other people who ive seen with a actual TOMTOM or GARMIN GPS. they all look at the GPS whenever the person speaks to them anyway. because the Turn by turn direction messes up pronounciations, and it always sounds so robotic that most of the time your just like "huh??" so u have to look at the GPS anyway.

at the same time, everyone looks at the GPS because they show you exactly where u need to go. just follow the line thats on the screen!! lol

if you listen to the person tell u where u need to go without looking at the GPS, then you got to look at street signs to find where you are, then make the turn.

most people just look at the GPS. and follow the line which is why i said a PING! noise to alert you atleast when ur really close to make the turn

Actually I think they can update the Map app with GPS functions. The Google Maps app on Android had an update that added the new Google Navigation into it. So I can't see why it couldn't be done with the Vita.

My awesome website about video games, music, comedy, or whatever. .

While Google Navigation is utilized by Google Maps (and is part of the package, you cannot download ONLY Navigation, you must download all of Google Maps), it's still a separate app.

So you'd need a whole new App for that.

Technically, your 3G Vita has actual aGPS (assisted GPS) hardware in it.  That is, it can tell you where you are, as long as you have an internet connection to load your local map with.

By 'true GPS device' I mean like a Garmin or Tomtom or even an iPhone running a TBT Navigation App (MotionX, Waze, TeleNav, etc).

Google Maps is exactly that: A Maps App.  It is not intended as a TBT Navigation tool, and I doubt it will ever get such an update.

The Maps apps on Androids and iDevices are simple maps, as well, and do not provide verbal turn by turn directions.  There are separate apps for that purpose, as mentioned above.

.....

It may have an aGPS reciever chip in the PSVita 3G versiion but it is not used in assisted made as demonstrated by people who have not activated there 3G plans and as stated in the manual.

Also everyone let us get the terminology correct, the PSVita does not act like a GPS or can act like a GPS ... a GPS is a satellite (so unless you launch your PSVita it will not be one and it does not belong to the GPS constellation). The PSVita has a GPS reciever in it for generating location data to be used by the software (near and maos, etc.). Maybe someone in the future will release some better navigation software (I hope so), maybe someone from these forums could use the PS Suite and some open source maps to produce something?
