6 replies 2866 views Edited Jun 19, 2010

Hi, I have been looking into running my ps3 on the internet with an internet dongle I've done some research and have found it can be done, now here's my dilemma, I would be using my ps3 for about 20 hours a week on line, what size dongle (gigabyte data) do you guys think is sufficient. THANKS in advance

Unless you have the 20gb model all PS3's have built in wireless internet. And I also don't think that a USB dongle will allow you to connect to the net. Keyboards, mice yes. Internet no.

Sounds to me like he's trying to use a USB Mobile Wireless Internet card, like from a cell phone company.

They do not work directly with the PS3. That is, the PS3 will not use USB for Internet connectivity. The way around that (as many people have done) is to buy a router that supports their Mobile Wireless USB device, or plug the wireless mobile USB device into a PC, and use Internet Connection Sharing, and plug the PS3 into the PC. The PC should be able to share its Internet connection with the PS3.

the only way you can have wireless on a PS3 that does not have wireless is with a ethernet bridge.  it is a small box that has a ethernet cable on one end which plugs into the ethernet jack on the PS3 (and any console that has a jack).  then your router will 'see' the bridge and you should connect just fine.  most wireless bridges are about 40-60 bucks or less if you go online and search "wireless bridge" or "wireless ethernet bridge".

My wireless dongle has a antenna I was going to use it to boost my signal using my neighbors open net we have a agreement....but instead i found if i use the dongle on my laptop and create a network and connect the PS3 to the net work may create the same effect haven't tried it been a bit busy....or connect your computer or laptop to your ps3 using a ethernet cable and see if that works

Problem with mobile internet is that it will likely be NAT type 3, which won't allow most online mp gaming. And without a jailbreak, there's no way to change the settings.
