I would definately call Wifi on the PS3 UNUSABLE FOR ANYTHING as of OS version 2.53 to the point that I think the box should read "Wifi capable" or some other buzz phrase that means it doesn't work yet.
I think there is just something wrong with the driver in the PS3 OS. If you put Yellow Dog on it, the wifi signal is just fine, which means this is something they could fix with and update.
Even at 100% signal strength at 54Mb/s, the MAX tansfer speed I got from my media server was 8Mb/s, the average was more like 500Kb/s and the connection was randomly dropped, killing the transfer after a few minutes. Boot the PS3 into Yellow Dog and I got 48Mb/s steady and the connection never dropped. I don't know how a 3rd party open source group got the drive right and Sony didn', but that certainly seems to be the case.
I haven't tried a wire yet, but from what I hear the PS3 OS can't even get half speed off of that, but at least half of 100Mb/s is still more than needed for online gaming and streaming media.

I have a launch 60 GB console and have zero lag and no problems with using wifi
WiFi always sucks.. Use a wired connection.
i always find myself getting kicked out from games whenever i have my ps3 setup for wifi.
i mean its not like a got a cheap router.
it sucks specially when the wife kicks me off the living room tv and i gotta take my ps3 to the bedroom tv where i gotta roam wirelessly.
i hate loosing connection.
does anybody run into this issue?
My observation has purpose, hence I am here.
i tried to stream a 175mb 30 minute anime episode with ps3 and it lagged about 6 times during the episode. took the same episode and put it on a flash drive and it played perfectly (not a codec issue). there is no reason a 175mb 30 minute anime ep shouldn't stream perfectly on a wireless g network. i have a linksys router with ddwrt firmware on it. with my laptop from the exact same distance as the ps3 is from the router, i can stream the episode fine and it is a wireless g device also.
i don't get much lag in games surprisingly. i'd wire teh ps3 but it's in another level of the house. not worth the trouble.
