So I have rhe black rite infernus (pretty sure its the only one you can get in demo). I know I lose defense for power od fire. Does that mean my fire attacks are stronger? Or Imy giy is just on fire?

You kidding?

It does massive damage

Spoiler
When I faced Soriarta , I tried just attacking her constantly to no avail. I used the Black Rite once, and she was down

I'm fairly certain that during the whole animation, you cannot get hit.

And it only has a certain area of effect (mainly, a radius around your character)

If enemies aren't in that radius, they take nothing.

It also halves your defense, hence the "price that must be paid". You sacrifice your skin to use it; the Black Rite can be restored with Lacrima. The amount of Lacrima increases to restore it the more you use it.
