recent news regarding Playstation 4 RAM

7 replies 245 views Edited Jul 26, 2013

so according to this source: http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2013/07/26/report-playstation-4-reserves-nearly-half-of-r... , Sony has announced that the RAM that was originally going to have 7 GB dedicated to gaming, is now going to have half of that dedicated to its OS? Honestly i don't mind waiting a second or two for the XMD or the dashboard regarding the xbox to pop up; why take so much of the ram away from the system? It may be nothing now, but what about a year or two, or even more when 8 GB of ram is comparative to the measly 512 MB of ram on the current consoles now? If this report is true, whats your guys' opinions?

My god...

After making some phone calls and talking to some of the neogaf devs (there are actual game devs on that forum who I'm friends with before their fame to game). It's confirmed and now I have to edit the spec portion of the first post of PS4 mainthread ...

http://www.neogaf.com/showpost.php?p=73024816

"-At most, the OS uses 1.5GB, with a good amount of that helping the HD recording feature and on the fly switching/ multi tasking
-4.5GB is indeed about what's available for devs at present.
-1GB is set aside for futureproofing OS operations down the line.
-1GB for developer reserve, should they need it"

I was also told that due to this Lowering of ram for the developers, the CPU clock can be overclocked to compensate.

Where did I hear that before...

In reality to me it seems a safety net and nothing more. With 1GB that can be requested the OS really uses 2.5. I think we will see that extra 1GB handed out like ice cream at a little league game. By leaving the extra space they have created a permanent solution to any problem that may arise, before it even happens. Smart move and in reality 4GB of GDDR5 would out clock 8GB of DDR3 any day of the week. When the rumor was the ps4 had only 4GB of GDDR5, it was still anticipated to outperform the Xbox180 and most high end PC's.
