My PS3 would shut off about 2 weeks ago.
Tonight i applied new thermal paste and it has not shut off (yet).
If it shows a Yellow Light, it's a serious problem.
My PS3 would just shut down, meaning overheat.. meaning the thermal paste was not working anymore.
wth is thermal paste? i am not a tech savy person, i dodn't see a yellow light, but my ps3 won't turn on, if it does it is for only 1 sec then turns off, but i do see a yellow light that flashes very quickly before turning off
Like everyone else is saying, your PS3 has the YLOD. So there are 3 options...
1. Try and repair it yourself: There are various tutorials on how to fix it on YouTube.
2. Go on Craigslist or ask around and see if you can someone (or some place) that fixes PS3. They will most likely charge less compared to what Sony charges.
3. Send it into Sony and they will either ask if you wish to get a brand spanking new PS3 slim or if you wish your PS3 to be refurbished. From what I can vaguely remember, they charge 160 for a new PS3 slim and 140 for your PS3 to be refurbished.
So you stated earlier that you are not tech savy so it would be best to go with option 2 or 3.
Give Sony a call and tell them about it bc it might b something easy 2 fix or maybe still under warranty. Their number is 8003457669. Hope that u get it fixed soon.
OK your PS3 isn't broke if it's blinking red, well It's not the main system like CPU or GPU or anything it's the Power Supply or the Fan or maybe both in rare cases. If it's the Power Supply that means one of the Main or Secondery Power unites are out, If it's the fan that isn't working properly the system also will turn it's self off to prevent further damage. By replacing both or if you find out which one it is, you will keep all your data on your system and restore your system the cheap way Power Supply $24.99 and the fan is around the same. The other is to pay Sony to fix your console & all the data will be gone with a higher price to pay, see how cheaper things are when you get your hands dirty?
P.S it's really easy to replace the Power Supply it's at the top of the system beside the bluray drive, but it's harder to get to the fan, the thermal compound is close to the fan so be careful in that area ok, if you remove the Thermal Compound you have to replace it cuz it's no longer usable OK, My website is The Gamers FIx.com......(^_^)
OMG YES to the person who said they had a 40gig as well, that the version i have and it is 2 years old too, got it in feb 2008........i really want the new ps3 slim anyway so i might just go on and have them replace it with that. can i take my 160 hdd out and still have all my data? and can i install that hdd in the replacement slim?
