ps3 internal slot memory

why do the 160/80gb ps3 have internal slot memory when it does not play ps/ps2

Actually they do... ALL PS3's play PS1 games and there are still people who have perfectly running 20/60/80Gb PS3's (which are B/C with PS2 games)

 

Plus, there are many PS1 and PS2 games for sale in the store. Some are HD remakes, some are just re-coded to run on PS3 hardware but no enhancements.

You can also use the PS3 to backup PS1 and PS2 saves, with the right accessory.  I never had a BC PS3, but it was still useful for managing my PS2 memory cards.
