need more help with ps4 HDD

8 replies 236 views Edited Nov 14, 2013

I'm just confused on which version they support, like do they support SATA, SATA II, and SATA III or what? I can't seem to find this anywhere, only a video showing how to remove it.

Videos are all over the Internet.

The drive included is a SATA 3.0 GB/s (SATA II) drive.

They support SATA III, although if your going with at traditional HDD, I recommend saving money and getting SATA II as SATA III speeds wont be used unless you go with an SSD

Be sure to get a 5400 RPM to keep the heat down, and also this goes without saying, be sure to get a 2.5 inch drive (laptop form factor).

The drive can not be more than 9.5mm tall. You wont have this issue unless you try to get something larger than 1 TB.

Here is a video on how to swap the physical hard drive:

Here is the process for installing the software on the drive once you have it in:

My reccomendation for a hard drive for someone on a budget who wants a nice drive

thanks, I just wasn't sure because the one I want only says SATA. This is the one I want http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EDIU5IW/ref=gno_cart_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1GV4DXS40X1A5
do you think it'll be good or is there a detail that will keep me from being able to use it?

Sure that is a good drive. A little too expensive for me though. You are paying more because it is SATA 3 (6.0 Gb/s). HGST is Western Digital which is a good drive. It is out of stock though.

If it were me, I would go with the one I linked earlier (SATA II is the only difference other than brand) Both are great drives and traditional 5400 RPM drives usualy see no effect from SATA III from what I have seen in the past... SATA III is best suited for an expensive Solid State Drive.

Here is a key for you to help understand the SATA stuff you are reading on those websites...

-- Tl;Dr (PS4 comes with a SATA II drive but supports SATA III thus making SSD a viable option

SATA I = 1.5 Gb/s

SATA II = 3.0 Gb/s

SATA III = 6.0 Gb/s

------------------

DETAIL:

SATA I (revision 1.x) interface, formally known as SATA 1.5Gb/s, is the first generation SATA interface running at 1.5 Gb/s. The bandwidth throughput, which is supported by the interface, is up to 150MB/s.

SATA II
(revision 2.x) interface, formally known as SATA 3Gb/s, is a second generation SATA interface running at 3.0 Gb/s. The bandwidth throughput, which is supported by the interface, is up to 300MB/s.

SATA III (revision 3.x) interface, formally known as SATA 6Gb/s, is a third generation SATA interface running at 6.0Gb/s. The bandwidth throughput, which is supported by the interface, is up to 600MB/s. This interface is backwards compatible with SATA 3 Gb/s interface

Wow that's awesome you know a lot about this, unlike me lol. I don't really mind the price I just want as much space as I can get generally because of having larger installs and mandatory installs at that. Also I don't have good internet so I feel safer with the 1.5tb because I don't want to have to get a new HDD really soon and have to download everything all over again. Do you think it's a good price for that amount of space or should I try to find another one?

Well, if you want to spend $100 + and go with Amazon / Western Digital ... then give this a shot.

http://www.amazon.com/HGST-Travelstar-2-5-Inch-Internal-0J28001/dp/B00EDIU5IW/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF...

It is 1.5 TB

SATA III

5400 RPM

2.5 Inch

9.5mm height

Should do the trick and provide you with plenty of room. That price is good for that to imo.
