Like many mobile phones, entering a lock wrong would cause the phone to format itself or lock itself up altogether.
It's meant to protect your data, not immobilize the unit after it gets stolen.
If you want to save your data, pull the memory card out before giving it to jerks who do that to you, or yet don't give it to jerks...

...um I rather there being a format button, then someone hacking it to get my psn id and such and steal that. (Since that way they will not go and steal your id stuff. Why do I say that because its easier just to format then to figore out someones code. Also that most people who steal something like that are not able to hack.)
