Will PS4 support Linux?

[ Edited ]

I've been shopping around for a new computer lately as well as getting more acquainted with various Linux operating systems. Is there any word on whether the PS4 will support something like Ubuntu or Mint? The internals of the system are pretty beefy, so if I could break off 100GB of the hard drive and install Linux on it I imagine it would make a pretty good desktop.

I'm nearly 100% confident that no, it will not support Linux, or any operating system other than the one designed for the PS4. This is because of all the people who try to use Linux or other operating systems to illegally acquire games, or hack the system. As a result, the PS4 will only be able to run it's native OS. Sony tried to use another OS in the PS3 and foolishly thought that the general community out there wouldn't try to use it as a way to bypass the security of the PS3. They learned their lesson, and as a result, they removed that feature via a firmware update.

No matter how many benefits something could have, all it takes is a few "should-have-been-aborted" idiots to ruin it for the majority. Smiley Sad

Bummer... I think a new computer and a next gen console might be a bit much for the budget.

Linux is pretty darn lightweight. You can install it to your existing computer and get away with it.

Just about any computer made with in the last few years can run some form of Linux. Why not partiion your current hard drive, or better yet, install a secondary drive, install Linux, Unbuntu, or whatever alternative OS you want, then you can dual boot your current computer? Or even ask around and see if someone is getting rid of an old computer? A lot of people buy new machines, and have no idea what to do with old ones. You can wipe the hard drive and install Linux on that.

Actually, it's a mid-tier ( in this speck of technological advancement ) gaming PC. I can USB boot to Linux, with GRUB I can PXE boot.

It will not, for the newbies to playstation they will never know the PS3 had a "other OS" feature.

They removed it becaue people used it to pirate. or at least sony THINKS they tried to. They removed it from paranoia.
