Usually the PS3 will downscale to the highest available resolution which your TV supports, so long as you haven't deselected it in your video settings.

If your TV is only capable of 1080i, and you only select 480p (which you can't deselect) and 1080p, the PS3 will downscale to 480p since your TV doesn't support 1080p.

Additionally, while the vast majority of Blu-rays display up to 1080p, some Blu-rays only display up to 720p (fairly uncommon) or 1080i (broadcast HDTV standard).  If both of these resolutions are deselected, the PS3 will only display the Blu-ray at 480p.  Unlike games, Blu-ray movies and videos cannot be upscaled beyond their 'native' resolution.

I dont think this is correct.

Under video settings in your PS3 there is an option to upscale 720p content and I am pretty sure its for 720p Blu-rays.

I will double check tonight to be sure.

To the OP, I would go to your PS3 display settings and select automatic, this will tell you which resolutions your tv supports.

If your tv is 720p you should be able to watch the Blu-ray at 720p.  But if your tv is only 1080i and does not support 720p, you may be stuck with 480p.

Hey at least its not 480i right.

Seriously, there's just certain things that we must accept about the PS4. In time, it may get better, who knows.
