Re: Why all the Concern over the OS RAM?

Jul 27, 2013

I found this post very helpful and explained plenty about this issue.

From Elios83:

Nothing special or worth the drama in my opinion.
They're just trying to balance all the different things while leaving the possibility for future proofing the system on the OS/applications level.
5.5GB for games, 1,5GB for standard OS and 1GB being left for future applications seems a really balanced approach.
Let's not forget why we have 8GB in these systems in first place....and hint...it's NOT JUST for games.
In fact the PS4 GPU and CPU were designed and targeted to run games with a memory budget of 4GB (actually even less because originally 4GB was the total memory, when Killzone4 was unveiled in February it used what? 3.5GB?).
I think people realize that a 100Gigaflops CPU and a 1,8Teraflops GPU are totally mismatched and underpowered to go with 8GB of memory if the purpose is just to run games.
The reason Sony decided to upgrade their memory was that 4GB were totally fine for games but they would have been left behind significantly with the OS, multitasking and applications.
The extra memory went mainly into adressing that. Microsoft is doing the same thing, 8GBs are not there just for the games, 3GB are allocated for the operating system.
Also the situation at launch will evolve and change during the years so we'll see much more stuff added, resources could be allocated differently, memory given back to developers, etc. In this phase is important that they take a balanced approach so that they don't end up like with the PS3 where they couldn't implement cross game chat (not to mention the new PS Store which barely runs on the system).

@ peckdogg
The rumor broke it down to 1.5 for the OS, 1 gb reserved for possible OS updates later, 4.5 for devs , and 1 reserve for devs

This is a real eye opener very dissapointed about this news, 1 gb should be plenty for thier operating system.

Im sure 1gb is enough right now. But in 10 years?

I can understand why both companies are leaving space.

Ps4 is leaving 3.5gb 1gb of which can be used for games if requsted and Xbox One has 3gb reserved for OS no word on if any of it can be pulled for future games.

^ Its all nothing but rumors. Every article posted here about it says: "from a reliable source", or "a source within the company". Unless the source is officially from Sony, don't believe it.

And don't even bring up Killzone; at the time everyone thought there was only 4GB of RAM.

That is a good point it is just rumors but I am expecting/ prepared to be slightly angry about this.  It isnt a deal breaker for me but it will cause a lot of concern.  No reason i can think of an os should need more then 2 gbs.  Not even M$ is planning on using that much.  But i wont talk or post about this again until I hear from Sony.

What's funny is, it's not going to affect your gaming whatsoever.

You're not going to be playing  Killzone Shadow Fall and say

"Man, these graphics are great but if only a few more gb of ram was available, this game could have looked even better..."

Give me a break...

If the Last of Us, Killzone 3, and Uncharted 3 can looks as good as they do with a 512mb split ram architecture, games are going to look great with over 4gb no matter what...

The thing is if Sony only put up 1GB for OS/UI, everyone would be complaining about how awful it is, it's too plain, and how laggy it is when going from game to Ustream, or chat or opening an app while in game or this or that. I'm sure Sony knows what it's doing, and this is coming from someone that's been on XBL for the last 10 years. No fanboyism here, just 30+ years of gaming.
