Actually you still would have been out of luck. The full power of the system (especially graphically) was never available in the "other os" modality.
I think Sony was a bit hacked off about the PS2 grid system. (partial story left on cnet: http://news.cnet.com/2100-1043_3-1010037.html) As CaptainAlbator noted in another thread today, game consoles are loss leaders, buying a stack of them for other purposes is not something Sony is interested in encouraging.
The reason they removed the os option was the hackability of the system was there. They wanted a more solid system and not a hackers delight system. If you want to do 3D, use your PC for that and not a game system.
