When renewing PS+ early... (some questions confirmed, early renewal is safe and worth it!)

24 replies 10844 views Edited Mar 29, 2011

NOTE:  I should have said this is my experience by renewing PS+ through PSN credit, as opposed to actually buying a PS+ card in the store.  I don't know how safe it is to renew with a PS+ card.

Hey all, I just wanted to let you know my experiences with renewing another year of PS+.  I have been a subscriber since day one with the year and 3 month sub.  Today I decided I would get another bonus 3 months before they take down that offer.   It appears that you do in fact get another 3 months for free.  My expiry date is now 12/xx/12 instead of 09/xx/11.

Also, not sure if this was pointed out... but when you renew, all your PS+ content that you received for free is moved to the top of your download list and has a new purchase date (on mine the date is today, because that's when I renewed).  What this likely means is that your downloads will still expire, but you WILL be able to redownload them with the correct expiry dates (which are likely extended when they change the purchase date).

I checked myself just to make sure, and it appears that all the free (things which I didn't pay for) PSN games, minis, PS1 games, Qore episodes, free DLC (and one theme for some reason) have been renewed and brought to the top of the download list.  This is basically a go-ahead for anyone to get the extra year and 3 months while you still have the chance.

Quick question for you... how do you check when your subscription runs out?

One way is to go to a game you downloaded for free using PS+, pressing the Triangle button, go to information then scroll down to where it says "Expires in XX days".

EDIT:  The above method of checking expiration only is accurate if you have never renewed early.

The most accurate way to find out is by going into account management, and go to the transactions part, and find the option called "Services".  There you will have a list of services, one of which is Playstation Plus.  Select that, and then select the "Playstation Plus" option again and it will show you when your subscription starts and ends.  Since I have now recieved 2.5 years ($49.99 X 2) worth of Plus subscriptions, my expiry date is 2.5 years after when I first signed up.

I hope this helps anyone on the fence about losing their free content or any other issues.  I was a bit skeptical because there wasn't much info posted here, but I have a hunch that the bonus 3 months is going to end after the Spring Sale (which is why I renewed now instead of later).  This is due to both the cloud service introduction and how many people are going to sign up because of it.

If anyone needs has any questions or needs clarification, just post here.

I'm experiencing the exact opposite.  In Dec i bought a 3 month card, I liked ps+ so in the beginning of march i bought a card for 1 yr and input the card early cause of all the forum response i saw about how if the ps+ expires you lost all the games.  so anyways when my 3 month expiration date came and went all the games i got durning my 3 months expired.  the dates did not roll over.  the only games i was able to play were the ones being offered that week on ps+.  all the rest were deleted from my download list.  I've been playing phone tag with sony over the matter for 3 weeks now, first i talked to support, they said i should still have access to those games and a tech specialist would call me.  when he called me he said he could reenable those games but he would not do so because the games we get are "Trials" and are only good for the life of the initial subscription and that support staff was misinformed.  so i called sony support back to talk to a supervisor.  they said he was wrong and I should have access and they will look into it and call me in 3 to 5 days.  that was a week ago with no calls since.  I'm telling u all be ready to deal with the hassle when your subscription ends whether you resubscribe early or not.

My current subscription is set to expire in December 2011.  If I renew early and get another 15 month sub on top of that, will I have to re-download the free games I currently have that are set to expire in December?

Nevermind, I answered my own question.  I just bought another 15 month sub (promotion ending 3/29) and as the Kirkpad posted, all of the free stuff from PS+ was moved to the top of my Download list.  What I did was download every one of them again, but cancelling the download before it completes.  That renewed the license on my free games, so you DO NOT have to downoad them all to your system again.

So I agree with Kirkpad, if you were planning to resub to PS+ once you subscription ran out like me, you might as well do it now and get 3 free months

It is a great offer but I'm going to wait for an official renewal incentive this summer. The three months is a $12 value, on the blog they mentioned reviewing new offers and some could include a full retail game like EU has done.

Unfortunately it seems like this is what I'll have to be going through. My downloads list was not readjusted and no matter how many times I download and delete and redownload they still say they expire in 7 days. I guess I will call them some time this week to see if anything can be done.
