S.L.A.I. : Steel Lancer Arena International
I don't know anyone else who has played this game. I'm big into mech game such as Armored Core, and I thought I would try this out (mostly because it was a pre-owned game and it was cheap).
I LOVED THE GAME!!! The story was surprisingly awesome!! It was like a futuristic mystery meets mmo mech gladiator games. You are the protagonist of this story and you play S.L.A.I., this online mech battle game that hooks up your conscious to the cyber world. Mech fighting is like a sport in this world and from there, epicness and chaos ensues. I love how each mech you fought had it's own kind of personality which made it seem like a live online multiplayer game, even though it was just me and some NPCs. Since I didn't have access to online play on my PS2, this was the next best thing. Not only that but the customization was pretty vast, as every mech game should be.
Finally, the gameplay is where the good stuff is at. S.L.A.I. has the essentials for a mech game, but the battles take place in confined arenas compared to the linear Mech missions of other games. It doesn't seem like fun, but with each arena, you have mini-bosses that show up after defeating an X amount of NPCs. After defeating an X amount of mini-bosses, the main leader boss comes out and you have to face him or her.
This story is all about rising to the top, and figuring out ways to deal with bumps along the way.
It's a great game and I think everyone should at least try it.
S.L.A.I. --- the great game no one knew about.
BTW -- the new mech game, HAWKEN, reminds me of S.L.A.I. a lot! That's one reason why I look forward to that game (too bad it's not on PS3)
