What makes the OLED screen for the Vita better?

10 replies 1399 views Edited Jun 10, 2011

I dont know much about screens and other technology stuff like that so what is the difference between a regular LCD or even a regular LED screen, and the OLED screen on the Vita? Is the display brighter or what?

Generally LED vs OLED...

OLED have better response times, better power efficiency, are lighter in weight and flexible, have wider viewing angles, and better brightness.

The colors are more vibrant and it shows over 16,700,000 colors and u can see the game clearly from any angle, this is useful because you will be moving the vita around with the gyro sensors, and i guess the feeling of the screen when you touch it would be more smooth and not like plastic.

OLED does not use a backlight like a LED/LCD does. The pixels generate their own light.

Correct. And because it does not have a backlight, shutting off the pixels completely makes true deep blacks unlike the supressed grey-ish black on an LCD.

If you have ever seen a Zune HD which most probably havent) then you will understand.  The colors on that device were fantastic and it is a very nice screen.  I compared the zune hd with my ipod touch and played a video of avatar the last airbender on it. The colors were more rich and vibrant. Shamefully the screen was smaller.

There are a few positives and negatives for OLED but, for the most part the picture of an OLED far out produces LCD.

According to this article, an OLED (like Sony's XEL-1) has contrast a contrast ratio (ratio of black to white) of 1,000,000:1 while an LCD or plasma might be around 10,000:1.

The biggest set backs for OLED's would probably be that organic materials are used to emit light from the red, blue and green organic materials (in reaction to other electircal and chemical reactions). At this time, there is more and more research beng done to improve life spans and hopefully the lifespan of the OLED materials will get better and better. OLED's typically last around 20k hours though, so that might be enough to hold up a good picture anyways.

OLED Displays have better response times, better details, energy efficent, etc; Not only that, they don't use florescent light like on regular LCD displays. They generate their own light, which is called LED (Lighting Emitting Diode). The black levels of LED displays are better than regular LCD technology.
