Ok so my Ps3 Slim 160gb has been acting strange for about a month or so but since I don't have the money to send it in atm, I've been sharing my cousin's since he rarely gets on. When the problem first started on MY PS3 I was playing UMvC3 and took out the disc while it was saing after a player match. The screen instantly froze so I waited for a 10-15mins and it wouldn't move. I held the power button for like 10 secs and it finally shut off but when I tried to turn it back on all I got was a black screen no sound or anything. So I waited an hour, because if I try to power it on immediately after I forced it off it will give me the unresponsive black screen. So from there I booted it into safe mode. Once in safe mode I started going down the list but sometimes the screen would distort, green pixels randomly placed throughout the screen, and freeze causing me to have to hold the power button and try again 10-30mins later. After I finally finished going through the list the problem remains, though I haven't seen the screen distortion for a while. The PS3 boots up to the XMB and I can even play a game but after 15-20 mins it randomly freezes on me. When that happens I have to wait 10-30mins to try again. Is this a problem with the firmware, or the HDD? If it's the HDD I can just switch in one of my old Laptop HDD's or if it's a firmware problem I can just update the firmware but I don't want to make a move without knowing exactly what the problem is. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I really want to play TTT2 on my own schedule XD
I am having the same color distortion and freezing problem but mine started in the middle of nba 2k12 and now 10-30 minutesand it will start distorting the picture with random color and freezes. I justwasn't it fiXed cause it's the old 80GB one and idw have to buy one of the newer ones.
just hope its not the same thing what happend to my xbox. it used to do the same thing 2 month later ring of death. if your ps3 is getting hot like mine does. try getting an old pc fan a usb cable, cut the wires and find black and red on both on usb and fan. and plug it in. and put near air out take, keeps my ps3 nice and cool now
I would say it can be an overheating issue, My PS3 had that issue a few years back. I went ahead and took it apart and vac's it out completely, then I replaced the thermal paste. Haven't had a problem ever since. Taking it apart I never recommend unless you know how to service consoles, but aways keep the vents free of dust and clean. Never use a dust blower, since that'll just blow dust into the heatsync and other vents inside your console making it more prone to overheating, always vacum it.
