How The Vita Outsold 3DS This Week

Posted on Wednesday, March 13 @ 07:15:08 Eastern by Heath_Hindman

"The unthinkable has happened: the PS Vita has outsold the 3DS in Japan. Turns out, all it needed was a little bit of Soul.

Sacrifice.

And a bunch of other factors like several other key pieces of software and that price drop thing.

Truly, Sony picked a fine time to experiment with a lower price, as the aforementioned Soul Sacrifice, teamed up with Tales of Hearts-R, Senran kagura: Shinovi Versus, Phantasy Star Online 2, and Uta no Price All-Star. Now, if you're like me and said an audible "The **bleep** is Uta no Prince?" when you read that, Wiki**bleep**ingpedia to the rescue. Apparently it's a music game based on a visual novel series. These happen. Japan. Sometimes, that's all you can say. It sells.

Below are Media Create's full hardware charts for March 4 - 10. The Wii-U is really hitting its stride, managing to sell approximately half what the PSP did.

PSV - 63,581
3DS - 61,008
PS3 - 19,567
PSP - 18,023
WIU - 9,454
WII - 1,363
360 - 768

You may remember that last week, the Xbox 360 sold 486 units, meaning this week saw more than a 50% increase. If these trends continue....

And here we have the software sales. Two Vita games in the top five? Five Vita games charting in the top 20? I'm not sure if either of these have ever happened at all, let alone within the same week. Next week, it has Steins;Gate and a new Nobunaga's Ambition game to look forward to. Later in the month will see Dead or Alive 5 Plus as well as Atelier Meruru Plus and the Muramasa port, so Vita should enjoy a good month.

1. (PS3) Hatsune Miku: Project Diva f - 110,229
2. (PSV) Soul Sacrifice - 92,396
3. (PSP) Uta no Prince-Sama: All Star  - 67,217
4. (3DS) Animal Crossing: New Leaf - 63,285
5. (PSV) Tales of Hearts R - 55,258
6. (PS3) Dynasty Warriors 8 - 46,866
7. (PS3) Far Cry 3 - 33,281
8. (3DS) Professor Layton and the Legacy of Civilization A  - 30,078
9. (3DS) Dragon Quest VII - 24,045
10. (PSV) Soul Sacrifice: "United Front" Double Pack - 22,050
11. (3DS) Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultimate Mission  - 21,915
12. (PS3) Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance - 17,833
13. (PSV) Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus: Otome Shoujotachi no Shoumei  - 17,138
14. (3DS) Doraemon: Nobita to Himitsu Dougu Hakubutsukan  - 12,768
15. (PSV) Phantasy Star Online 2: Special Package  - 10,031
16. (PS3) Crysis 3  - 9,602
17. (PS3) Macross 30 - 9,294
18. (PSP) Shining Ark  - 9,161
19. (3DS) New Super Mario Bros. 2  - 8,452
20. (3DS) Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - 8,096

That Hatsune Miku game is pretty much a port of the Vita one, presumably without the stupid inclusion of touchscreen use. It was the top selling game with an asterisk, as the two versions of Soul Sacrifice combined add up to more than Miku."

It's nice to see the Vita with a decent set of sales numbers. It would be even better should it hold for a good while. It would be even nicer if we saw some of those RPGs over here, like Tales of IHearts R and Phantasy Star Online 2. I know a lot of people are hoping to see a price drop outside of Japan. That would provide another good boost.

As nice as these numbers are, it's the sales numbers in the next few weeks that are more important.

We all knew that the price cut, accompanied by actual GOOD titles, would sell more Vita units. But what about the week after? And the one after that?

Bursts of sales are nice, but consistency is better.

A lot of the credit goes to the SS LE PSV; I bet it easily moved 10 ~ 15k units. But Glaciusx25 has a point, in fact, you can see how titles that were killer last week already dropped a lot. Most notably Senran Kagura which is now doing 7k and more than likely will be gone in two weeks~.

That said, this spike will, hopefully, give third party hopes in the system and they may start developing for it more actively. Credit due where credit's due though, the price cut was put at the best time possible for Japan; I only hope Sony of America / Europe get their heads out of their **bleep** and do the same overseas~.

F*#k yeah!!! Go Vita go! I think this is 2 weeks in a row! And that definitely means it isn't just some spike due to the price drop, we can expect some solid sales to last a long while.

This should show signs to sceptics about the death of Vita and all... All it really needed was a much required price drop and people are buying it like there's no tomorrow.

With the recent price drop on 3G vita in US, I hope a similar effect occurs here, finally knocking Sony to its senses and bringing the price down globally! Come on! Stop hurting yourself, reduce the price and reverse the damage!!! We need more Vitas in the wild and more games in my hand!!!

No, the 3DS outsold the Vita 77,572 to 60,897 last week.

That's good news. The PS Vita has sold more in two weeks than it managed in the previous two months. SCEJ should be feeling very confident right now and I'm sure some studios are taking notice. America and Europe are probably gearing up for a post E3 price drop and software blitz.

When you say it like that, kind of sounds depressing lol

agree, the vita need more killer titles and more third party developers that the only thing the vita need to not let what SS did for the vita go to waste otherwise in 1-2 weeks things will go back to what they used to be and hopefully that SS game encourage more third party developers and we hope to see sony of america / europe do price cut because the prices now are stupid , few days ago I was trying to get my friend to buy vita and after he said ok we went to the store but he didn't buy one because the price is high and the price of 16 gb memory is over 50$ while there is no gaming device make you pay high price just for the memory card lol it's only a stupid memory card and not only my friend, many other people I know don't buy a vita because they don't want to pay that much for the memory card
