Transferring data from a broken PS3

2 replies 108 views Edited Nov 20, 2011

My PS3 Slim has the YLOD, and instead of getting it repaired, I'm wondering if it might be a better investment over the longer term to get a new PS3 Slim with a 3-year warranty.

The HDD in my broken PS3 has data on it, and although it's nothing very important (mostly just some game saves), it would be nice to transfer this data to a new PS3 if possible.

Is there some way to cross this data over from the HDD of the broken PS3 to a new PS3? Or is it necessary to get the broken PS3 fixed before being able to transfer that data?

The drive is locked to that physical console. So you'd have to get it fixed. You can call Sony and see if they will just extract your data for you (leaving the old PS3 broken).

From what I know Sony always wipes the HD every time you send a PS3 to them. Only a 3rd party repair place might be able to retain your data.

To be able to protect against this in the future, one should subscribe to PlayStation Plus where there is an automatic cloud game saving option...
